To All,
I need some advice. I am an RN and am terrified to speak to my MD about Dr. Bernstein's recommendations, knowing how much he values his "evidence based practice". I've pushed him with Atkins, which he grudgingly agreed to. At the same time, I live in my body and have to deal with the consequences of not doing what Dr. Bernstein recommends. It is counter intuitive to think that a high carb diet makes any sense at all in a diabetic.
Having succeeded at getting off all my DM meds on Atkins in 2003, I am now very concerned about remaining on meds that Dr. Bernstein feels will exhaust my pancreas, I'm not sure what to do. I am tempted to try BetaSlim GXR, ALA and evening primrose, and taper my own meds (glucotrol). I am also on Lantus, and test very frequently 5-8x per day. As a health care professional, I think I can manage things myself, but I'm still hesitating. I can't take the other recommended meds such as Metformin which is a shame, because when I was on them, I did well for a long time until recently(early lactic acidosis symptoms) and Avandia or Actos (edema and SOB).
Anyone have any hints or ideas that might help? I have an HMO so my choices for alternative medical practitioners are slim to none. Thanks in advance for any help you might offer.
