  • Pre diabetic

I'm just starting Atkins again, on the advice of my dr along with a script of metformin. Is anyone on the same boat? I don't seem to be losing as fast as I did in the past on Atkins. Is this normal? And should I get a kit to test my blood sugar? My dr didn't mention it. Thanks for the help.

      Re: Pre diabetic

I've recently been told that I'm pre-diabetic atfer the results of my yearly blood test. I haven't been put on any meds yet. The doctor just told me to come back in a month and we'll talk. Well that wasn't good enough for me so I bought a blood glucose meter and I'm testing myself daily. So far the results that I've been getting are all normal.

If you have an insurance plan and get a prescription from the doctor, the meter and strips are covered.

Sounds good. I think that's what I'll do too since I know that my blood sugar is prone to drop dangerously low. Not sure if my dr will write a script, though. When should I test, or does the kit have info about that?

          If you're pre-diabetic I don't see why your doctor wouldn't write you a script.

You should test first thing in the morning, 2 hours after meals and before and after exercise. Also before bed. This is what I've been told. You don't have to do all the tests in the same day though.

            Hi shoewoman and welcome!!

The following thread, which is a sticky is this, the Diabetic Forum, will give you a pretty good idea of when and where to test.

            http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=2293

In addition, do you have the following books?

            1. Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) (2002 version) - This is a MUST for anybody on the Atkins Diet!!

            2. Dr. Atkins Diabetes Revolution.

            3. Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. There is a sticky in this forum with a link to his website. However, it only has portions of his book.

                  Re: Glucose levels

I'm sorry to say, I have no idea. I was diagnosed with Insulin resistance, adrenal fatigue, chronic active Epstein-Barr virus, high serum levels of aluminum, and, pending a sleep study, probable sleep apnea all at the same time, so I was just trying to soak in all the treatment protocals at the time. I'll try to figure out what part of the lab printout is relevant to insulin resistance, and let you know. I have been looking for a dr for 14 yrs to tell me I wasn't crazy, but that there really was physically something wrong with my body. I'm so excited to have finally found him!

                    Traci,

When do you go back to your doctor? It wouldn't hurt to ask him about getting a script for the meter. Like wannabe said, there shouldn't be a problem.

At the end of July. I'll probably just buy one. My friend, whose dad is diabetic, says sometimes you can get them free when you buy the test strips.

Wow you have a lot going on right now.

Atkins will help your insulin resistance too even without the metaphorin but the metaphorin will speed up the process and should help with your weight loss too. You should have insulin levels along with your glucose level for him to diagnois you with both.

                              Tracy,

Hang in there! I went to a Health Fair and found a Diabetes Association booth that was giving away thte test kits for free. Do a search for a local organizaton like that, and you may be able to get one without a Dr. order. Though, like it's been said, if your doctor said you were pre-diabetic, then they would probably prescribe one.

I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes about 3 months ago. I had the A1C test, and a Glucose Tolerance Test after my doc saw an abnormal fasting blood sugar. She recommended Atkins, and taking cinnamon every day. So far, my daily morning blood glucose tests have been well under 100, which is great. Excercise and lots of water are key, i think, too.

Just keep learning as much as you can. I second the vote for the Dr. Atkins Diabetes Revolution book, written by a doctor and a nurse that worked with Dr. Atkins before he passed away. It's recent, relevant information on the Atkins plan from a current perspective.
