  • Post prandial blood test?

Two weeks ago, I had a post prandial blood test done to check my blood sugar levels. Has anyone else ever had this done? Basically, I had to go in 1st thing in the morning so they could get a fasting blood sample. Then I had to go eat a "well-rounded meal" and come back for more blood one hour after I finished eating. I haven't gotten the results back yet, but I'm wondering what to expect.

My doctor says I have Syndrome X, so I asked her to do the blood tests and prove it. Will this kind of test tell me if I'm just Syndrome X, or diabetic or what? How worried should I be?

This same doctor's office mailed me the results of my Pap & Mammo; should I expect them to mail me blood test results as well? And if I call them and ask for the results, how do I know how to interpret the results?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

since this is an Atkins board one has to assume you are eating Atkins and used an Atkins style meal as your meal so you should get true results for your blood sugars and insulin reaction.

Now if you are Atkinsing and ate a USAD style high carb meal your results will be useless as you will show up diabetic as would any of us doing that. Dr Atkins discusses this issue in DANDR about hoew you need to be off Atkins for 3 days proir to doing sugar fueled blood tests.

I am a lab tech and would perform these test. It is simple, your glucose should return to a normal level following the meal/ drink, some people take to load.

You should call your Dr office and ask for results. I would hope they would give you a Positive or Negative, rather then a number; leaving you to decide. Most often if the test are negative or borderline MD will continue to follow. Otherwise, it would be the best protocol for you to have followed up on any abnormal results by now..

I would just call to get results, and make am appt. if you have questions or concerns about the answers.

        Re: Post prandial blood test?

I was a backsliding Atkineer . . . . a lot of you probably remember my name from the millions of times I've started and then fizzled out. So -- no, I wasn't following this WOE when I went in for the blood tests. I got scared into giving it another shot by my doctor's visit, when my weight hit 297, my blood pressure shot up higher than ever, and my doctor saw fit to order tests to check out my blood sugar & cholesterol. I DON'T want to have to go on medication.

I started Induction the day after my blood tests. So I figure anything that happens now will give me a good "Before" and "After" point of reference.

yep i recognized your nic. Whew about not being on Atkins when you did that test.
There is a famous test done on a group of college guys who were put on low carb. The theroy was their blood glucose would be great but it shocked the scientists when every one of them tested as diabetic when given a GTT even though none of them was a diabetic before or after the testing.

so now docs warn low carbers to come off the low carb plan for 3 days before taking the test to get a true evaluation of the blood sugars and insulin reactions.

              Re: Post prandial blood test?

I finally called my doctor's office about the test results, and they said I have to come into the office and sign some kind of release form before they will give me a copy of anything. Since I live 'way far out in the boonies, I'm not going to drive all the way into town for that. But I've got an appointment on the 19th (pre-op for getting tubes tied), and I'm going to insist that someone give me the results and talk to me about them. I guess one more week of wondering won't kill me . . . it just seems like a common courtesy for someone to contact me and let me know what's what.

I mean, telling me I may be pre-diabetic or Syndrome X or whatever and then letting me worry and wonder for a month?! Why not just a simple "yes" or "no" phone call? Of course, this is the same doctor who found a lump on my breast but can't get me in for a mammogram until the 19th . . . and my mom died of breast cancer at age 46.

Hmmmm . . . and now that the doc tells me my blood pressure is high, too. This has GOT to be good for that!

Grrrrr! Hate doctors, hate 'em, hate 'em . . .

                lady,

It can be soooo frustrating, the way they do that (especially with your blood pressure).

Please keep us posted on what happens!!

                  Re: Post prandial blood test?

Finally got the test results, and . . . . I'm NOT diabetic! Not even pre-diabetic or anything. My fasting glucose was 89 and the 1-hour post-prandial was 110.

So, the doctor who wanted to give me all kinds of medications for diabetes was just working on the assumption that all obese people must be diabetic. And the past few weeks of stressing and worrying because I believed her . . . . worry over nothing. The really scary thing is that she was ready to start writing me prescriptions on my last visit, but I demanded blood tests and proof first. If I'd been more of a wimp, I would have been pumping all of the drugs into my system unneccessarily!

So . . . . long and short of it is that I guess I won't be here on the diabetic board anymore. Best wishes for good health for all of you. Now I've just got to figure out what to do about the BP of 149/104. Yikes.

exercise and weight loss should do wonders for your blood pressure.
