Did his doc do a metabolic blood panel to look at his BUN and creatinine too?they will be a better indicator of what is going on then just protein in the urine.
Being a diabetic he might have already had pre-existing kidney damage too that is now showing up because of the higher protein intake.There is an extensive study done by a doc hoping to show Atkins high protein did infact damage kidneys but all his studies showed that unless you had pre-existing kidney damage high protein eating didn't harm kidneys in any way.

How much protein is he actually eating doing his modified Atkins? as you know many folk over eat the protein part so lowering that could greatly assist him if in fact he does have kidney damage.

humans have a very redundant kidney system and can live very healthy lives with just 35% function in one kidney.
