Has anyone had any experience with protein in the urine? My husband who is diabetic was told he has protein in his urine. We don't have the test results yet, but we are wondering what this means? Is it caused from poor BG control? I am trying to gt him to try Atkins- but since he doesn't need to lose weight he is not interested. Also can the test be affected by exercise? The day he took the test he had just gone for a 50 mile bike ride. The doctor put him on an ACE inhibitor, which he doesn't want to take because it could affect his job- he is a UPS man. They frown on meds that can cause you to have low blood pressure! We have lots of questions- he probably needs to schedule another appt to get some of the details about the condition, instead of just another prescription!

There are lots of reasons for protein in urine from eating too much protein to some serious diseases. What did his doc say about it? Any addtional tests scheduled?by the book atkinseer

Sass, the new Atkins diabetic revolution book is for diabetics and is not about weight loss, it is about BG control. Ask him to read it.I think he needs to have it followed up to determine what else is going on.
ACE inhibitors have been found to provide some kidney protection to diabetics over 55 with high bg but he must manage his bg …….weight issues or not……… as this could be just the beginning of many complications or could be a glitch on what he’s eating and excercisng.Hi Bg damages minute veins in kidneys first, if showing any damage he must gain control right away, what other meds is he on.How long is he diabetic and how long is he out of control with BG.

The ACE inhibitor is to protect his kidneys from more damage. However the bike ride could cause increased protein excetion. However since we do not know the whole case, best thing to do would be to discuss this issue with ur doc and may be repeat the tests.
Hope this helps.

I just went out and got the book! He is going to go back to the doc and have it checked again. I think he probably does have something going on because he told me over the weekend that he has pain in his back right at his waistline. I am going to go to his appointment with him. I think he is kidding himself about being in control because he is so active. His A1C is usually around 6.5, which is good- but he also eats whatever he wants whenever he wants! I know lots of nights he goes to bed with his BG really high. He only tests when he knows he is low- like after riding his bike or in the AM. I hope the doctor can impress on him that he needs to be more diligent about his diet, even though his exercise is great.Donna

Ya cause research shows with traditional hi carb low fat diabetic diet only 50% of diabetics can get under an 8 for an A1C so they think its great……… but would be better to be under 6.1 which is non diabetic, I know I know, USA uses a higher number but really is spoofing Americans into thinking 6.5 is great when research shows and all the rest of world says get under 6.1......so his Dr has bought into the politics of drugs companies and lobby groups etc and if they keeps numbers higher than rest of the world………. then eventually the drug companies and political guys make more kickbacks, IMHO. Its kind of like the Cdn drugs harm Americans but amazingly they are good for us and the rest of the world….DUUHHHHH……..its like they treat the everyday person as though they have no gray matter of their own and they try brain wash everyone, if I lived there and knew what I know today I would strive for under 6.1 just to live a longer life without complications. I know.....shoot me.....cynical ole bag I am.......LOL
So how did his appt go,????
