  • no carbs...but high blood sugar?!?

I have hardly eaten any carbs for a little over a week and my blood sugars are still elevated...not as high as before (300-400+), between 190 and 140. Why is this? Like I said, I haven't eaten many carbs, what is going on? I'm on Glucophage 2X a day and I exercise regularly...actually when I exercise my blood sugar drops almost 100 points. Has anyone else had this experience and is it just a matter of time and perserverence to get my sugars where they need to be? Thanks for your help!

too much protein acts just like too many carbs because the human body converts excess proteins to sugar for storage. This is why Dr Atkins says not to eat his plan too high in protein.

IF you use the free online site www.fitday.com to log your foods see what your protein intake % is as it should not be over 30%.

Even if it is at 30% as a diabetic you could be making more sugar from your proteins then your insulin production can handle.

Have you discussed your Atkins with your treatment team?

Thank you for your response....I didn't realize that protein did that. I discussed Atkins with my Diabetic Educator and she was happy that I was willing to make a lifestyle change and thought that Atkins was super. The dietician wrote up some examples of food plans for me and that is what I am going by...except I'm avoiding all breads and any carbs that are not complex (I will eat veggies except for carrots, peas and corn). Wow...Fitday is awesome...thanks for the suggestion!

Last night I went out for dinner to a mexican restaurant and I was thinking...what am I going to eat?! Well, I ordered beef fajitas - without the tortillas! I mixed them with lettuce, pico de galo, guacamole and sour cream and my blood sugar hardly moved! That made me very very very happy. Thanks and have a great day!

        your welcome.

Atkins is a high fat plan with abut 65% of your cals from healthy fats like you had last night so it is ideal for diabetics. We have a diabetic forum with lots of great info for those watching their blood sugars.

        Happy low carbing.
