  • Got my diabetes test back today

Forgive me if this question is dumb, I'm fairly clueless when it comes to diabetes. My father is borderline diabetic (controlled with diet) and I have an uncle who needs to use insulin. I've noticed the last several months that I'd feel bad after eating a lot - stomach upset, just a general icky feeling over all. Just out of curiousity I went and had a fasting blood sugar test for diabetes this week and I was given my results by a nurse. She said that the normal range the fasting blood sugar test I took is 65-99, and my blood sugar was literally 99. I asked what that meant, and she said it's not at the point where they'd be very concerned, but I should watch my carbs and sugar and they considered me "pre-diabetic". Well I said but I'm on Atkins, I already watch my carbs and sugar, and is it more concerning to have a high reading if I'm already watching what I eat and she said possibly.

My question though is I did stumble a bit on my diet this weekend - Saturday night I had some pizza (yes with the crust ). I took the blood test on Tuesday morning - would that pizza still be affecting my blood sugar after 3 days and fasting 12 hours prior to my test? I'm just not sure if I should be more concerned that my blood sugar tested high if overall I'm eating low carb and low sugar already. Any feedback, please?

Is this the only glucose test you have taken? If it is, then you really only have a snapshot, which isn't nearly as useful as mutiple pictures at different times. If you had taken the test while not on Atkins, you may have had a higher test reading; indicating improvement since then.

Why not invest in some test strips and take regular sugar readings to see how you're doing in real life? After all, just because you're NOT eating heaps of sugar, your body may have trouble handling the huge sugar load of their glucose tolerance test, but no trouble the way you currently eat.

      Boonie -

This was the only test I've taken. I'm not sure what you mean by gluclose tolerance test. I took a fasting blood test where I didn't eat for 12 hours prior to the test, they drew blood and tested my blood sugar. Is that different than the gluclose tolerance test you mentioned?

That's a great idea about getting some test strips. Can get these at any ol' drug store?

actuaslly no the stumble wouldn't but if youhad a lot of protein the night before it could as our bodies convert protein to sugar up to 54% of it even when we eat our Atkins correctly so if you had a high pro meal say 13-16 hours before the test it could have.

other folk have high blood sugar when they are under any stress as the body reponds to those stress hormones by getting ready for danger and releaseing stored blood sugar is one way. read wannabe's topic as she had a high test and was told she was prediabetic. she monitored and was retested and all was normal. one blood test does not a diabetic make. don't stress over it. by some test strips and get a meter if your insurance will pay ofr it and check yourself several times a day waking, before and after you eat and see what is normal for you. then discuss those with your doc.

As to the stomach distress it could be a food allergy or intolerance you have developed. What did your doc say about it?

Sorry, Bunny - I just assumed it was a GTT because when I got tested, I fasted then had to drink a special bottle of liquid, then give blood sample at intervals of time afterwards.

          The drink was very sugar-loaded.

As for the strip, they range from those similar to ketostix, which are pretty cheap, to those that work with the various testing devices. Any drug store should have them, usually in front of &/or behind the Rx counter; just ask.

By the way, 2Big, is there a formula for how many excess protein ounces eaten equals how many carbs; ie., if I eat 2 extra 3 oz patties over my 30%, (assuming that 30% is how much protein I needed that day), how many carbs did I add to my total carbs???

no everybody has a different metabolism and has different protein storage levels in their organs and muscles plus the need for tissue repair differs every day too.

Ok,, ... so just assuming all else constant, after 6oz excess protein (ie not currently needed for your protein storage or tissue repair), how many carb grams are available from 6 oz protein?

a six ounce serving cause would have water and fat and connective tissue weight too it is about 170 grams. the protein is broken down into amino acids and the hydrocarbon is severed from the nitrogen part. Only a few of the amino acids can actually be used for glucogenessis alanine being the major one. you end up with 2 C3H7NO2 going to 2 pyruvate and NH2 and then 2 pyruvates are converted to C6H13O9P with the help of a lot of energy molecules. so it is a 2 molecule for one molucle swap. alanine is the major amino acid in muscle proteins but not the only one so you would need to have more exact info on what you are eating

LOL that indiana site is a very good one but you have to read every amino acid there to realize other amino acids can also make pyruvate too so you will not get a direct answer as a one to .5 ratio as each protein we eat has different combimations of animo acids and only a few of them can be converted to sugars but those few make up the majority of the aa in the proteins we eat.
