I started Atkins 3 weeks ago. I have not taken anything for my diabetes for years but I check my sugar every morning. Since I have been doing Atkins it has gone from about 110-120 every morning after fasting, to between 138-150. Has anyone else seen their blood sugar go up instead on down?

Re: Sugar levels have been higher
too protein intake will cause blood sugar to rise. if you are having a late night snack try using a fat and a veggie carb not a protein. if after a week of that yiou still don't see it lowering try just a fat. if you are still elevated time to see your treatment team.by the book atkinseer

Re: Sugar levels have been higher
Thanks for the reply.
I don't usually eat before bed so I don't know if that is the problem. I took my sugar after 12 hours of not eating and it was still 150. I will give it another week and see if it starts to go down.

The human body will increase the blood sugar in the morning in anticipation of you getting up and doing doing stuff too.

Re: Sugar levels have been higher
Recently, my Mom asked her Dr if this was normal to have a high reading in the AM and he said it's fine. She too is on Atkins and still taking her diabetes meds. I, on the other hand, had to stop taking them because my blood sugar was dropping down to the low 80's even into the high 70's..

Re: Sugar levels have been higher
A man at work, who has diabetes and is not on Atkins, said that his glucose is high in the morning if he doesn't eat a snack before bed. I think he said that he eats a peanut butter cracker or something small.
Maybe eat a small protein/fat snack before bed and see how your reading is the next morning. (Tablespoon of cream with a little cocoa/spenda, piece of cheese, etc.)~Kat
