  • Too Much Protien for Diabetes?

    Hello there!

Does anyone have any information about a new study that shows that over 80 grams of protein per day can lead to poor kidney function? My wife spoke to her "weight loss" doctor today and he said there was a new study that contraindicates Atkins for peopl ewith Diabetes. Now, I only have pre-diabetes, and have lost 40 pounds with Atkins, so I'm a bit skeptical. Any research into this?

    Thanks!

Re: Too Much Protien for Diabetes?

many folk with diabetus have kidney damage already a study in the annals of internal meds in early 2003 there is a link on the board if you use the search prooved high protein DOES NOT CAUSE KIDNEY DAMAGE IN ANYBODY and is only harmful if a person already has kidney damage.

Since you have seen your doc before you started and had your kidney health check with your blood work then you and your doc know if you have kidney damage or not before you started.

As your wife to ask her diet doc for a copy of this study and besure it didn't say for those diabetics with kidney damage already. Diabetics need to watch protein intake because as you know reading your Atkins exceess protein is converted to sugar and for those with out adequet amounts of insulin to handle this it can be dangerous to their health. since you are pre you have insulin and can do Atkins.
