  • I guess I'll be joining you folks!

Just thought I'd introduce myself over here.

Well, this is one section of the board that I haven't spent much time in, but from now on I guess I will.

My BF has been diagnosed with Type II. Neither one of us knows squat about diabeties so I'm hoping hanging around with the experts here a little will teach me some things.

He was admitted to the E.R. with a blood sugar of 650. From the way the medical staff reacted I'm guessing that is not a good thing. He was also diagnosed with high blood pressure and dehydration. They pumped 3 bags of liquids into him and ran all sorts of tests.

So far we havent' been given any advice but its only been 2 days. He's been given 5 prescription drugs to take so far, I don't know the names of any of them though.

    So here I am!

I'm also wondering if anyone can recommend any good reading material that would help?

I picked up a small book named "Type 2 Diabetes for Beginners" that looks very basic.

I'm wondering if anyone has one that they've read and found helpful?

Hi, Moggy - just stopping by to express my sympathy re. your BF. Hopefully, he's planning to do Atkins with you, if he isn't already. I know it could make a huge difference in how much he needs medications. I can't refer you to any books, but you can get information & free coupons from the makers of ensure / glucerna, or the conductors of clinical trials (see http://www.centerwatch.com/patient/s.../stu75474.html) plus there's loads of info on the web about Type II Diabetes.

      even http://www.webmd.com/content/Article/102/106672.htm

(The reason I've been studying is a step daughter w/type1 and my own high risk of type 2, in light of having been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes 12 1/2 years ago)

Sorry to hear about that MOG,

even though this is the Atkins board and Dr Atkins did write a diabetic book as his last book and Canuk is in it the Berstein book is the one recoomended by most of our Diabetic members for info and the why's. there is a stickie with a link to most of the book online actually http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ad.php?t=15047

this forum has a lot of stickies full of info and can look overwhelming when you first see them, but most of them are medically sound info for diabetics to know about.

Do they think he is a tyoe2 r a type one (insulin dependent). Low carbing is the way to go induction may be too drastic for him but OWL is good place to start. Blood sugar monitoring daily several times a day is also important as he lkearns what is normal for him.

Thanks Boonie and 2big. You know 2big, I had forgotten that Dr. A wrote a book! doh! funny how you don't pay much attention to things when they're not relavant to you. I will definatley check that out!

And thank you both for the links.

Yea 2big, I started reading in this forum but found that I felt like I was trying to read a foreign language! I don't understand most of what everyone is talking about! LOL

            Hi MOG,

My Mom recently found out she has diabetes...I forgot which type (the one where you dont' have to take insulin injections). My grandmother also has it...so I will be diligent on getting physicals each year to test for it, seeing as both my mother's and fathers side has it.

I wish I knew of a good book to help you...my Mom took a class rather than read (English isn't her first language). She tests her blood everyday, and it's always good

Anyway, just wanted send good thoughts to you and your hubby!

yep those that have diabetes have a shorthand code all their own but once you figure out the terminology it get easier to understand. and I think we have a stickie with everything explained. Dr Bernstein does a greeat job explaining stuff on that site and have over 1/2 a century of experience with low carbing diabetics from a personel view.

                Thanks Lisa.

Oh and 2big, as far as we know he has type II, at least we sort of deducted that because they gave him pills instead of needles!

Yea, its gonna take some time for me to figure out the lingo! Right now I'm lost!

Re: I guess I'll be joining you folks!

If I'm not mistaken, type I is very different from type2 in that with I , your body produces insufficient insulin, with 2 there's trouble with your bodty's use of the insulin it produces, so sugar rises, and even more insulin is produced, too much insulin in the blood resulting in insulin resistance or something like that, which becomes progressively worse; AKA "Sugar Diabetes" (long-term excess sugar-eating predisposes one to it by forcing excess insulin to be circulating over a long time period).

                      Hi MoG!!

                      Sorry about your BF!!

I'm sorry that I just now saw your post, but as with all the other forums, (and as you know yourself), we have alot of great people ready and willing to step up to the plate!!

Please make sure that you read all the stickies (Fortunately, 2Big already pointed out Dr. Bernstein's (aka Dr. B.) link and mentioned about Dr. A's book).

                      Any more questions, please ask!!

Re: I guess I'll be joining you folks!

actually type one is defined as the inability to produce insulin with antibodies being present in the majority of people having it meaning it is an autoimmune disease for most.

type 2 simply means your body isn't able to produce enough insulin to met the demands of the body for it.

type one must be treated with insulin while type 2 may respond to simple control of blood sugar by diet, exercise, and/or medication. Some type 2 folk use a small amount of insulin along with other controls.

oh MOGGY! I just saw this post! Sounds like you and I have something in common. Cliff was diagnosed in March. I know exactly how lost you must feel right now.
Yep, scarry as all heck at first. But, after a bit it all makes sense.

The one thing I found to be the most helpful was Cliff and I took the course offered by our local hospital. I learned more from that course then anywhere else.

If I remember correctly John ( am I right on the name??) is not a big man. When Cliff was diagnosed I made the mistake of putting him in induction......... he lost too much weight. So, he is basically on OWL and eating approx. 60-90 carbs a day.
There is alot to learn, but he is so lucky to have you as you "got it" and are a great Atkineer!

We have bought several books, but the one Cliff found to be the most helpful was Diabetics for dummies......... as it is short, sweet and too the point. I continue to read anything I can find!

Even the testing is scarry at first, but after a bit it is easy.

I am here whenever you need. If only for moral support or whatever!!!

From what I have learned.......... Type II can be several factors..... you either produces too much, too little, or does not get distributed properly?

Anyways, I highly suggest you take the course if at all possible!!

MOG get a meter cause as John drops his sugar from the exercise and the low carb eating his meds can actually cause him to get too low and his team will need to knw this with the meter results to back y'all up it should be no trouble adjusting his doses for the treatment team.
