Increased Chromium Absorption Linked with Reduction in Cardiovascular Risk Factors in People with Type 2 Diabetes
Study finds reduced risk factors as total cholesterol, trigycerides, LDL cholesterol and lipid ratios.

A new randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study found a significant correlation between increased urinary chromium levels -- a measure of chromium absorption -- and reductions in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, including total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and lipid ratios in people with type 2 diabetes.

The study evaluated 36 people with type 2 diabetes over 30 days. The significant reduction in CVD risk factors was seen in study participants who added Diachrome(R) (a combination of 600 mcg of chromium as chromium picolinate and 2 mg of biotin) to their daily treatment regimen. The group taking Diachrome also had significantly improved glycemic control, as measured by a reduction in blood glucose levels after consuming a beverage that contained 75 grams of carbohydrates.

Blood glucose levels were measured at 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes following consumption of 75 grams of an oral carbohydrate solution. In the Diachrome group, a significant decrease (p<0.03) was seen in the total increase of blood glucose levels over 2 hours (area under the curve - AUC) after consumption.

"The results of this study suggest improved carbohydrate metabolism and better glucose control for people who are obese with type 2 diabetes and are concerned about managing post prandial glucose levels after a high carbohydrate meal," according to James Komorowski, MS, Vice President, technical services and scientific affairs for Nutrition 21, which commissioned the study. "It was very encouraging to see these positive benefits in only 30 days after taking Diachrome," added Mr. Komorowski.

"The data build on earlier clinical studies suggesting that chromium picolinate supplementation can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce cardiovascular risk factors in people with, and at risk for, diabetes," said James Komorowski, MS, vice president of technical services and scientific affairs, Nutrition 21, who commissioned the study.

This is very interesting. Did they recommend only taking the supplement before a higher carb meal, or was it to be taken daily. I have been taking chromium HVP, is this the same?
