  • Diabetes and the berry rung

I will be approaching the berry rung in a couple weeks, but I noticed pre atkins any time I ate fruit, my BG's would sky rocket. I am curious how to go about it without raising my BG's. I am almost afraid to try them.
    Any suggestions?

Well, I don't know much about diabetes...but berries are the lowest GI fruit. Make sure you eat them with fat (like whipped cream, cheese, or nuts) to prevent a blood sugar spike.

Great thanks, I wasnt sure how to go abot doing that. If I notice a spike in my BG's I'll stop that rung.

I would also suggest eating them with a meal, rather than by themselves, even if you were to add fat. I believe strawberries have the least sugar of the berries...but I could be wrong.

I wonder if any of the other diabetics on here have had problems with the berry rung.

Try it! What do you have to lose! Mr. B does fine with berries......... no spikes etc. He also has other fruit and when he limits his serving size to ONE he has no problems. Note, I said limits serving size........sheeshh, men!

Hi - I am a type 2 diabetic and just starting back into atkins after being away for a few years. My doctor told me I could have a small amount of dessert if I ate it with protein to prevent blood sugar spikes. I always kept almonds handy. I wonder if it would be the same with berries?

                Hi Sheri,

First of all, do you have the Book (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution - DANDR - 2002 Version)? If not, PLEASE get it!!

Check out the following thread ("What Are the Rules of Induction"), paragraph 4:

Also, check out the following thread ("What Foods Can Be Eaten On Induction?):

I am not quite sure what the objection was here. I was only suggesting eating berries with a protein. It doesn't have to be nuts - that was only an example of what my doctor told me. I just hadn't heard of eating fat with a sugar to help spikes. I guess i was looking at this from more of a diabetic standpoint. Sorry.

                    Hi Sheri,

I'm very sorry if my post came across an objection. It wasn't meant to be that at all. I was just trying to point out that if a person is on Induction (whether that person is Diabetic or not), there are certain strict rules to follow for at least the first 2 weeks. Once you get to the Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) phase, you will be given the opportunity (at the right time) to add various things that aren't allowed at Induction.
