  • Results from latest bloodwork - Help, please.

Today I got copies of my latest results. My HbA1C is up from 6.0 in July to 6.3 this week. I was so convinced it would be lower, and now am feeling a little depressed. I have worked so hard to try to get my BG lower.

Some other numbers I don't quite understand that perhaps you could help me with are:

MCH 26.9 (Don't know what this is) reference range is 27.5 - 33.0

Red blood cell count 5.15, reference range is 4.00 - 5.10

MCV 80.8 (don't know what this is) reference range 80-95

My creatinine is down from 82 to 66, is that good?

My HDL is up from 1.11 to 1.29 :joy
LDL is down from 3.40 to 2.60 :joy
    Ratio is 3.6

TSH is 4.16 is that good?

Under RBC it says Erythrocytosis and Hypochromia (not sure what that means)

    Any help would be appreciated.

      woo hoo on that cholesterol.

Relax on that HbA1C increase a little . your abnormal redblood cell numbers may have effected your test as it is a measure of the glucose attatched to the hemagolbin. your doctor will be talking to you about it.

the TSH will depend on the measuring scale. the Endocrine society moved the threshold to 3.o for those with symptoms. Do you have any low thyroid symptoms. your doc will discuss it all with you.

The drop in the creatinine will depend on the range for the testing they used. I could be since it means your kidneys are working better clearing the bad stuff out of your blood or it could be too low which is a sign of too little protein in your diet and some time preg.

MCV measures the average volume of a red blood cell by dividing the hematocrit by the RBC. The MCV categorizes red blood cells by size.

The average weight of hemoglobin in a red blood cell is measured by the MCH

Hypochromia is an anemic condition in which there isn't enough hemoglobin in the red blood cells
Erythrocytosis means you had too many red blood cells in that sample and can be anything from dehydration to a more serious condition.

When is your appointmnet to discuss your results with your doctor??

Thanks for the quick reply 2big. The receptionist at my doc's office thought my results were OK, although we did not go over them individually. There was no discussion of a follow up appointment to discuss the items out of range. If I understand you, I should probably push for an appointment to clarify some of the out of range results. If there is a problem, I would rather address it now, then wait until it gets worse.

Thanks again for your help. You always treat my questions with respect, and I appreciate your time and effort in helping me understand.

they are very close to normal and may just be from what you did the day before, but if your doc doesn't think you need to follow it up I wouldn't worry about it as long as you feel fine He knows your medical condition better then any of us. You could call and ask. He should have signed that he saw your results before they released them to you.

                Hi Canuck

Yes I am still on Metformin 4 times a day. I called the doc's office on Friday to find out if I should be concerned about any of the lab numbers, and the receptionist said that the doc did look at the results and didn't need to see me, and not to worry.

Was curious if going low in middle of night and having rebound and maybe fasting BG is up and then A1C up but normally metformin doesn’t do that. I always follow up whenever one of my tests comes back abnormal just to ask questions, curious and wouldn’t leave it to receptionist. I always like to know what it means. It’s up to you.
