fasting BG was 101. After 1 and 1/2 weeks on Atkins (Dr told me to lay off carbs and knew I was eating very low before) 2 hr GTT was 114 fasting, 224 1hr, 214 2 hr and a1C 7.0. All tests were done in office on glucometer (not w/blood draw in lab). Dr said I had diabetes and put me on ACTOS and told me to check my blood. I went for 2nd opinion and new Dr said that Atkins would give a false positive, but the A1C was the real answer and not likely to change in 2 days. Well, the lab one said A1c was 5.9, completey normal. He took me off the meds. I still check my glucose morning and evening. Morning is usually higher than at night. I don't understand. It usually is abt 105-115 morning. During the day and 2 hrs after dinner it's usually between 95-105. But when I was on an IV it was 173,but went down quickly, and was 209 when I had an Italian Ice (had to be on only clear liquids because of colonoscopy). I am concerned that I really do have diabetes. I wonder if this is due to being on low carbs for last 6 weeks.

Re: false positive gtt
I don't know. It was for a colonoscopy. The nurse said there was some glucose in it. It probably had saline solution also, and meds. I checked my glucose about an hour after the Italian Ice. That's when it was 209. Then 2 hours after eating it, it was 131. The next morning it was normal.

Re: false positive gtt
Your blood sugar level was normal after the italian ice. Guidlines state that two hours after eating it should be below 180, then continue more down to normal levels. Also, any IV solution with dextrose will keep your glucose levels up as long as it is running. You can't count that as a fasting blood sugar. I really can't see how being on low carbs would induce diabetes.
