  • false positive gtt

fasting BG was 101. After 1 and 1/2 weeks on Atkins (Dr told me to lay off carbs and knew I was eating very low before test) 2 hr GTT was 114 fasting, 224 1hr, 214 2 hr and a1C 7.0. All tests were done in office on glucometer (not w/blood draw in lab). Dr said I had diabetes and put me on ACTOS and told me to check my blood. I went for 2nd opinion and new Dr said that Atkins would give a false positive, but the A1C was the real answer and not likely to change in 2 days. Well, the lab one said A1c was 5.9, completey normal. He took me off the meds. I still check my glucose morning and evening. Morning is usually higher than at night. I don't understand. It usually is abt 105-115 morning. During the day and 2 hrs after dinner it's usually between 95-105. But when I was on an IV it was 173,but went down quickly, and was 209 when I had an Italian Ice (had to be on only clear liquids because of colonoscopy). I am concerned that I really do have diabetes. I wonder if this is due to being on low carbs for last 6 weeks.

    Re: false positive gtt

Hi sodsrus, It has been told to me that the GTT does give false positives for diabetes by my ADBB buddies. When I talked to my Dr about this I aksed him what he would tell me to do if i did have diabetes. He said *i'd tell you to control your sugar intake, and if your glucose levels are normal durring the day then you can avoid medication*

So, on Atkins you are doing exactly that, controlling your sugar. I would suggest keeping a log of your glucose levels while not taking the meds. Show your Dr the log, and ask him if at these levels would he put you on medication. See what Dr says and then get a second opinion if he still stands by his decission to have you on meds. not all Dr's support Atkins, Sad but true. So, the decission is up to you........ and your Dr. I guess. But for the most part diet can control diabetes and reducing weight is a very effective way of preventing it. So if you think it truly is a false positive then consider the mdication. But until you are eating more carbohydrates and are closer to your goal, it will likely be a false positive, since your pancreas is not used to that high of a glugose level in your blood stream. I chose not to even take the test, for that same reason. Hope this helps.

after almost 5 months on Atkins and over 63 lbs down! Watch for updates!

      Re: false positive gtt

Thanks!! My new Dr. does approve of the Atkins and he was the one who told me that I would get a false positive if not eating carbs. He's also the one that took me off the meds. The old Dr. told me to lay low on the carbs knowing I would be taking the GTT. He also knew that I was doing the Atkins before doing it. His opinion was that if my GTT was high even tho I was on the Atkins that just proves I had diabetes. Thank God that I read on the internet afterwards that he was wrong. I decided to get a second opinion. The scarey thing is that he teaches diabetes classes. I would have been on meds not needing them. I still check my glucose and it is normal through out the day, altho high in the morn. (Not that high, 100-114) I just was concerned when I was on a glucose IV and it went pretty high. At one point it was 209 after eating an Italian Ice with 35 mg of carbs. But it went normal quickly. I love this web site!! Thanks for you reply!!!!
