  • My A1C...Atkins is saving my life

    Hi all,
I just wanted to post about my A1C test. I was diagnosed about 2 years ago with diabetes. My A1C was 10.1 and my sugar levels were concistantly in the 300's and the highest being 444 Even on meds I could not get my suage levels lower. On meds they were still in the 200's, and I started getting nuropathy (sp?). I still have some numb parts in my feet
I started Atkins on February 1st. I have been very dedicated in getting my life back, and very commited to doing Atkins. Yesterday I went to the Dr. to get my blood results back. My A1C went from 10.1 to 5.7!!! And my triglycerides went from 222 to 166!!! My cholestrol is the same which is a little on the high side 234 (but I will work on that, and it wasn't high enough for them to put me on meds for it). My blood sugar levels are always no higher than the 120's. I'm no longer on diabetes meds either. I was on Metformin and Glipizide. Oh, and I don't have that constant pain in my feet anymore. I still have little numb parts, but I can live with that. I'm writting this because I want people who have diabetes to know that there is hope, and this WOE is saving my life. My feet, my eyes, my organs, MY 6 YEAR OLD daughter is more important than sugar, more important than potato chips, chocolate, you can name your own drug of choice. With saying all that I do know how hard it is, believe me I do. I wouldn't have been over 300 pounds for over 20 years if it was easy. And sometimes having a little hope (like knowing this WOE is working for someone else with diabletes), can take you a long way, and carry you through those hard times. Hope is a powerful thing
I just wanted to share with all of you. I've come so far, and I'm still moving forward

That IS GREAT! My mom just recently had a stroke. She is a diabetic. her diabetes was the reason for her stroke. Her A1C was 13!!! to see yours at 5.7 is just incredible. The norm some docs like to see is 6. My mom's was more than doubled! My dad died 13 years ago and he was diabetic and a heart patient he died of his 3rd or 4th heart attack. My mom just had triple bypass last June. I'm doomed if I don't do something now. You are an inspiration!! Keep it up!! It's worth while!!

I'm Canadian so I had to convert your numbers but I have to say that you are doing awesome!! I'm really surprised that your sugars were as high as 444 mg/ml (24.7 mmol/l). My doctor told me that anyone that reaches 20 mmol/l (360 mg/ml) should be hospitalized. So for you to be able to drop it to 120 mg/ml (6.6 mmol/l) is truly amazing!!

I'm also a Type 2 diabetic and today I did a 12 hour fasting to get my blood sugar levels checked. I won't get my results until Thursday but I did get them to put a drop of blood on my machine to see where I was at. It read that my blood sugar was 5.2 mmol/l (93.6 mg/ml). Now I just have to wait to find out what my A1C is.
