    Hi All

I was dianosed with type II diabeties about 13 months ago. I am on 1 actos and 1 metaformin daily. When diagnosed my blood sugar was a nice 468......with meds pre adkins it was 130-170. I've been on induction for 9 days , and as an experiment i stopped all meds to see what the numbers would be. I use a one touch ultra lite 2 for my meter. The nice thing has been that my blood has held between 73-98 for the first 9 days. Today i used my first packet of splenda and 1 hour after using it (in decaf coffee) my blood spiked to 128- anyone have any ideas why it would spike like that? Will splenda cause a spike? Or is my body getting use to the low carb diet and causing my blood to spike? I'm not real savey on blood sugar reading- i do check 2-3 times daily, and keep good records of my results. Any help would be appriciated............thanks

      Re: Questions

Welcome to and also to the Diabetic Forum!!

It seems that you're doing a terrific job!! Are you taking your medications again? I would suggest that you check with your medical professional about that.

As far as your question about Splenda, check post #5 by not2late about Splenda and spikes in Blood Sugar Readings in the following thread.

          Re: Questions

WTG Pitbull!!!!! I love to hear results like these!!!

I am with Coop on consulting with your health care team about dropping the meds though. If I remember correctly, Metaformin is one of the meds that hardly ever causes too low a reading. But, please check with your health care provider!
And, I also agree with the YMMV. Maybe try a different sugar substitute and see what happens?

            Re: Questions

also, the one hour may not be enough time for your body to absorb and react to whatever you have had.
Wait the two full hours and see.
Another thought is what time did you have the coffee? Many people get higher then normal readings first thing in the morning.
lol lol lol.......... Alot of variables here!
