  • New and going low!

Hi! I just joined the board and am so excited there is a whole forum just for diabetes! Are there other tpye 1's on here? Atkins so far has dramatically cut down my insulin, which is so exciting!

One question I have is about going low... I know if I do go low, I need to have some carbs, even if that goes against Atkins, but are there certain things that are better than others? For example, is juice better than soda?

Thanks so much for your help!

    Hi Aberger,

Welcome to and particularly, the Diabetic Forum!!

First of all, do you have Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) (Version 2002)? If not, it's must reading.

Another good book is Dr. Atkins Diabetes Revolution.

In the 2nd book, (on page 216) it is stated that going too long without eating can trigger a drop in blood sugar.
Try not to go more than four (4) waking hours without a meal or a protein snack - a slice of turkey, a chicken drumstick, or a small piece of cheese for instance.
As far as fruit juice vs. soda goes: According to Dr. A, fruit juice can be high in carbs and soda (even diet) is not the greatest either. (That's not to say you can't have any.)

Your best bet would be to have a protein snack and make sure that you have 8 8-ounce glasses per day.

Howdy! I know this question was posted a while back, but for those curious I just thought that I would say what I do to stay from going low. BTW I am a type 1 diabetic also. To keep from going low I dramatically cut back my insulin intake. For example my normal dose is 1unit of insulin for every 10 grams of carbs. When on atkins I bump mine up to 1 unit of insulin for every 20 grams of carbs...so I really don't have to take any insulin...which is great and I feel like I am saving money. Hope this helps some!
