    Hi all!
I missed the Jan 2005 boot camp, so I am doing my own Induction! I am a type II diabetic that takes both insulin (before each meal and at bedtime) plus glucophage. I am starting a study with my doctor that will provide all of my medication and require me to report in all of my blood sugar readings, how much insulin I take and everything I eat.

I believe the journaling will be the biggest benefit of this study for me. I am currently at 245 and I have to get down to 180, so I have a long way to go.

I will be keeping this board up to date on what is going on with my journey!

    Thanks to everyone.

Hey RW, welcome, good name, hope it is not symbolic of how you are???
good to be in a study, get better care, does doc know you are doing Atkins then, I had to come off my insulin in 32 hr once started Atkins, was taking 15 u fasting acting before each meal and 55 units of NPH at night, and in one month had to come off metphormin, same as glucophage so please test lots and be aware of having lows. You will have to test more and be more diligent to prevent them.
How long a diabetic, stick with us, we will support you and if can will guide you thru.
Have you read Bernstein’s book about The diabetic Sol'n and Atkins new one The Diabetic revolution, might aid you in making good low carb food choices.
If I go and carb creep my BG will go up a bit but not much, I feel so much better, I was 245 when I started and seem to have trouble getting out of the 180 but stay with it as it is better for my health and my energy.
Hope to see you around, why not join our induction 2005, its here in a thread.

        Hi RamblinWreck and welcome!! :wave

canuck and 2big, as always, gave you great advice. Just want to elaborate on a couple of things posted by canuck, as far as the books go.

The complete titles are as follows:

Dr. Atkins Diabetic Revolution (2004 Version)

Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution (2003 Version)

There is also a website with excerpts from Dr. Bernstein's book:

And one more thing, do you have Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) (2002 Version)?

Please make sure you have a copy of the DANDR-2002 and having the other two books will certainly be a great advantage to you also!!

Rambling Wreck from George Tech fight song for the school and a badge of honor claimed by all.
I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech and a **** of an engineer,
A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, **** of an engineer,
Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear,
I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech and a **** of an engineer.

Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I'd dress her in White and Gold,
And put her on the campus, to cheer the brave and bold.
But if I had a son, sir, I'll tell you what he'd do.
He would yell, "To **** with Georgia," like his daddy used to do.

Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three thousand pounds,
A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it around.
I'd drink to all good fellows who come from far and near.
I'm a ramblin', gamblin', **** of an engineer.

As you can see the last stanza isn't low carb

Thanks to everyone for the support and the welcome!

I have both of these books. I am re-reading DANDR and I am reading the Diabetes Solution for the first time!

Yes, I am drinking between 96 and 120 oz of water a day and walking 3-4 miles per day.

2big4mysize, you are absolutely right about the school tie-in! I am a true Ramblin Wreck from Ga Tech!!!!! Go Jackets!!! (I will definitely skip the last stanza of our fight song!!!!)

Canuck, I have just started on the study with my doctor. I currently take 18-20 units of Fast Acting insulin (Novolog) and 60 units of long lasting at night (Lantus). I also take 2000 mg of Glucophage a day.

I have been at my same weight (currently 240) since I was a sophmore in High School (over 20 years ago). I haven't ever lost it nor have I gained any. However, I HAVE to lose 60 pounds to get down to 180 or so to be able to enjoy the rest of my life with my wife and my daughter. I have done the typical male thing of thinking that if I ignored my diabetes it would just go away! I know that is stupid, but what can I say. I have been tracking my blood sugars much closer because of the study and I now realize that my diabetes is really out of control! I am worried about the long term effects. I have had diabetes for almost 8 years and I have been on insulin for the last 4 years.

I really hope that I can come off most of the medicine, especially the insulin by losing all the weight. My doctor says that it may be possible, but we will have to wait and see.

My doctor does know that I am following the Akins WOL and is supportive, but he likes South Beach better because of the lower fat in the diet. He does completely realize that reduced carbs is vital to a diabetic. He has been recommending this since I have been going to him (over 8 years now).

Sorry for the long post, but I am really focused on doing this for me and my family!!!

Thanks again for the support. I will join in on the 2005 Induction thread!

WOW RW goodonya for finding the way now, its never too late.

2 big is there anything you don’t know,((((((2big)))))))) how the heck would I know a school song from the deep south....hehe...all I know about Georgia is they grow good peaches and some of our nicest guests in the B&B are from Georgia and they have the nicest accents around.

Now if you ate all that sugar you would be a rambling wreck for sure.

Glad you have great doc. Did you read my story up top; yes, you can get off your insulin. I was diabetic for 9 yr when I started Atkins. On insulin almost 2 yr prior to Atkins and 2000 mg of mepthphormin too.

All diabetics go thru denial and I read somewhere in research it takes 8 yr for a diabetic to not deny anymore for the average, isnt that something.

We need to find a way to break thru that barrier, for me I think I felt shame at my weight, shame as I didn’t exercise and had a desk job so didn’t move much in a day and shame for everyone knowing somehow I may have eaten bad to become diabetic and like fat people get treated stupid anyhow so it was like a double whammy.

I did their program and ate 200 plus carbs a day, 12 servings of grains a day was what they pushed and 3 oz of protein a day, it made me go from 175 to 245 over the ys and used more and more drugs. They all told me oh that is normal, as you have diabetes longer you will need more drugs.

Well now I am in my 11 yr of diabetes, my BG are that of a non-diabetic and I use no drugs. Had someone told me of Atkins many yrs AGO I might not have endured all those flippin needles in my belly, side effects of drugs, and damages and ravages diabetes does to the body.

But maybe I would not have heard it either.

Ramblin don't be hard for self for not listening, females are no better at this with diabetes than males.

Just to reassure you though……..I think males do have functional deafness though when its time to do the dishes LOLOLOL
                JK!!!!!!!!!!

                  Canuck, thanks for the response!

Yes, I have read your story and it inspires me to do the same!

As a native Georgian, I appreciate the good comments about our peaches and the folks that visit your B&B. Where in Canada is your B&B? I know it is lovely in the great white north!

By Jasper national park, in Alberta. My pharmacist moved to Atlanta, if she knew I was off insulin she would dance with joy as I bawled when I had to go on it feeling such defeat.

Canuck, every time i see your pictures- I am amazed at the change in you! You look so different! I know that I do too- I think it is just hard to see in yourself. I would post a picture, but I don't know how- and have never bothered to learn. When are you going on your trip? Sounds like quite an adventure! Have you been there before? We leave this weekend for Tucson- I hope I can control myself- all that great Mexican food is going to be quite a temptation! I have lost a few extra pounds so that I have a little cushion- not that I will go off Atkins- but you know how that carb creep is! One good thing is that when you have diabetes you cannot just go off plan- without going back on medicine- and I have no intention of doing that ever again! Anyway congrats to you- you look great- and your husband has been very successful too- so congrats to him as well. :wave
