  • Normal levels thx to Atkins

Hello fellow Atkineers, Pre-Diabetes and Diabetes Type II folks,

I've been diagnosed with (Pre-) Diabetes Typ II in 2001. With the help of my physician and dietitian I was quickly able to lower my blood levels again - but not for long and surely not for good. My weight slowly but steadily increased and my blood sugar levels kept worsening - however never to a point where my physician wanted to describe me medicine. I consulted with various dietitians, but always struggled with their attitude towards food and eating habits. In June 2007 I reached a point, where I was absolutely unhappy with myself, my body, my poor health and sad soul.

I heard of Low Carb diets and googled if they were are also a solution to beat my pre-diabetes. I read about Atkins and was instantly thrilled about what I've read. I ordered the "Atkins Diabetes Revolution" and shortly after also "The Atkins New Diet Revolution" to fully understand the diet in detail. End of June 2007 I then began with Atkins for the first time and achieved amazing results in just 5 weeks. Unfortunately I did fell off and struggled for months to get back on plan, also due to health problems, as I had a nasty gastritis bothering me on and off. In February 2008 I re-committed myself again to this WOE and set out a plan how to get back on track. I re-read both books and choose a start date wisely. March 3, 2008 I re-started and this time successfully.

I've been 9 weeks on this WOE and today I had my 3-Month Check-Up. I'm very happy to report, that my HBA1c is 5.3 - that is a normal, healthy blood sugar level! I'm so excited!

My fasting levels are at 6.0 - which I'm okay with (normal is up to 5.6) and thanks to the regular exercise my blood pressure is at 125 / 75 - (according to my doc, that is great!)

My goal for the next 3 months is, to lower my fasting levels to 5.0 - 5.5 and at least maintain my HBA1c reading (if not possibly lower it) and of course continously reduce my weight.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in this forum - you are all such a great source of support, motivation and inspiration. And I would like to motivate and reasure new diabetic Atkineers, that this WOE really does work for Diabetes Type II and obese patients.

    Thank you & warm greetings,
    Salima

      Congratulations, Salima!!!! Absolutely FANTASTIC!

I can relate having been diagnosed with Diabetes, June of 2007, thanks to Creek (another Atkineer)! My doctor stated that I was not diabetic, but if I continued with my weight program (WW) and exercise, should not have a problem. My glucose was 140 at the time. To shorten this story, with the symtoms I was having, Creek swore up and down that I was diabetic. She asked if I join Atkins and try having a low carb program. Since at the time I was under the misconception that Atkins was just cream, fat, steak and eggs.. I doubted but left my mind open (not this site). I went to a new doctor to find out that my A1C was 13!!!! Creek was absolutely RIGHT! I was diabetic! After tests upon tests to ensure that I was fine (walking around with it for at least 3 years).. results were strongly suggested to have gastric bypass surgery.. Needless to say, NOT. Creek found this forum and I committed myself along with herself to be an Atkineer. My glucose has finally stabilized! (266 to 112) Thanks to the support, knowledge, caring of this group and a great program, am on the way to being a healthier person!

I congratulate you! and am most pleased to read another person's experience of having A1C improvements!

            FANTASTIC SALIMA!
Welcome to the advantages of the Atkins WOL. You will find that your A1c will be consitant each few months that you have it checked. I believe that I told you before but for those who don't know, Atkins reversed my Type-2 Diabetes. In fact, it dissappeared 48 days into the plan. I have been Diabetes free for nearly four years now. I was just told by my physician last month that I am no longer at risk for Type-2 Diabetes. Thanks to Atkins.
I'm so very happy for you Salima. You're reeping in the rewards of your healthy lifestyle. Kudos.
            Sincerely, Sherri
