  • imfo on taking diabettes meds and atkins

hi i want to no if u need to add a few more carbs to your diet if u need to be on medication for type 2 diabettes.
ive been on atkins 2 weeks having decided the day i had another blood test to check if i indeed had diabettes. (few reasons a yr before that i belived the doctors had it wrong when they said i had it)
i lost 6kgs in the first week on atkins where i then got my results and found i have it and have also started having problems with my kidneys leaking a high protain level
i have been put on metformin 500mg 1 tablet aday in the morning.
the doctor says this is a very low dose.
i have been having a cup of tea with 1 and a half teaspoons of sugar and milk with it 2 times aday because im worried that i mite not have enough sugar in my body for this tablet to work.
i was on another medication for diabettes the yr before that sent me into hypos when ever i took it.
i wasnt on any diets and was just eatting my normal high carb diet i guess then.
am scared i will have a hypo if i dont drink with it something sweet as i felt so sick the first day i took it with only my breakfast on atkins diet. the next day i added the tea and i have so far for 6 days added it and felt fine.
have any others on medication have any advice please. thank u from andrea

    Hello,

Metformin can sometimes cause you to feel upset to the tummy. It can also send you to the bathroom with the runs when you first start taking it. I personally wouldn't take extra carbs as this med is not a pill that lowers sugar right away. As it was explained to me it has to be in the system for a while before it really starts to work. It has to build up in the body. It does not lower your sugar it works with your body to get your cells to allow the insulin your body does make work better. It is like a key that unlocks the insulin process. 500 mg is a low dose. I would take it and just check your sugar regularly. If you see your sugar going to low you might be able to stop taking it while on atkins. This I would discuss with your doctor though.

Hope this helps but please talk to your doctor to get a better answer.

I take 1000mg 2x per day of metformin and I am in extended induction. I am having no issues with my blood sugar at all. It is controlled better now than ever.

Even though I am in the US i do enjoy my cup of tea, so I just put some Splenda in it. No problems at all.

I eat 20-30gm of carbs a day with no problems. As far as you kidneys, maybe drink more water and talk to a Dr, but I have had kidney stones my whole life and for me, it is just not drinking enough water.
