  • OMG, can this be real?

Hi all, I'm a newbie here, diagnosed with Type II in 2004 and have been on Metformin ever since.

Last year I stopped my meds and tried to manage my diet, failing miserably. I finally got meds again two months ago but even with them, my sugars were constantly in the 200-300 range.

Well, as I'd been taking 1700 mg. a day...

I'm now on day 8 and have lost 12 lbs, and for the last three days, my numbers have been in the 120s or lower. Tonight they were in the 100s after dinner.

I've never seen them that low, and it's freaking me out!

    Can anyone offer some advice?

    Thanks in advance!

Re: OMG, can this be real?

Hi there and welcome to ADBB

In regards to the weight you have lost so far, yes that part is very real and will continue to be so as long as you stick to what Dr. A says in his book. Everyone has different results don't get me wrong, but some have really awesome results and that sounds like where you're at right now. Congrats on the 12lbs lost

A couple of other VERY helpful tools for your journey if you're not already doing them, is to read Dr. Atkins book, take your measurements weekly or monthly, and take pictures of yourself through this awesome journey you're now on. The book will answer so many of the questions that you will have along the way, taking your measurements definitely helps for the times the scale isn't being quite so generous as it can show inches pouring off still, and the pictures will help you to see the changes taking place in your body even when you don't see them by looking in the mirror.

When you're feeling ready, have a look at the challenge page, and see if there isn't one you might like to try. It helps to make one feel accountable, and sometimes god knows, we need the extra help.

I'm sorry that I can't offer you advise on the diabetic part of your post, but I do know Dr. Atkins and many others have claimed that Atkins can heal your body in ways seemed to be unattainable before. There are many truly great story's that have come from people doing Atkins.

I wish you all the luck in the world with your journey, and look forward to seeing your progress along the way.

I see no advice needed. A blood glucose of ~120 is near the top end of normal (depending on your last food intake). You're good to about 70. I'd be celebrating unless your doctor says it should be higher for some reason.

Congratulations on your loss ... of weight and sugar! As Sassy1 implies, maybe Atkins is the key to managing your diabetes with diet alone.

Congratulations, you have arrived. No advice ,only best wishes. The closer you follow the atkin program the lower the blood glucose goes.

Congratulations!!! I had the same experience with my blood sugar with Atkins. I understand that 'too good to be true' feeling. Only it is true. Atkins is the way to go!!! Especially for Diabetics.

Re: OMG, can this be real?

Congratulations -- I've already had 1 medication change with my doctor but my fasting (morning) readings are still too high so she doubled my nighttime dose. I'm hoping with a few more pounds gone I'll get another change!

I'm take 1 glyb/metformin 5/500 in the morning and 1 metformin 1000 at bedtime. I also take medicine for high blood pressure, high triglicerides and high cholesterol. In the next couple months I have a blood test scheduled so I'm looking forward to seeing the numbers from that!

Keep up the great work - obviously you are going in the right direction and doing the plan as it is intended!

High triglycerides are not so good. Mine were not too high at 135 but by taking omega 3 they are now down to 55. I think it is worth a shot.

Congratulations on your 12 pounds gone forever!
It would be a great idea to inform your doctor of your lifestyle change if you havn't done so already. Atkins is a very healing woe expecially for Type-2 Diabetics and it will balance out glucose levels and reverse Type-2 Diabetes. I know because it did and has done so for me the entire time i've been in this lifestyle.(5 years) My Diabetes reversed 47 days into Atkins and hasn't been an issue since.
I would recommend you get in touch with your doctor so he can start reducing your Metforim. You'll be kicking those to the curb soon once your glucose levels stablize to healthy levels and your Diabetes will be controled by Atkins alone. I kicked two types of Diabetes medication to the curb because of the healing effect of this woe(way of eating). I get my lab done every 12 weeks and have an excellent A1c each time.
Congratulations and welcome to the healthiest lifesyle there is.
Wishing you the best of health and lite.
                  Sincerely, Sherri

I was prescribed Lovasa 4 pills a day for my triglycerides -- because they were so expensive (my co-pay $50.00 a month) I was only taking 2 a day, so they weren't doing me any good. Now I take them the correct way and next month I have blood labs scheduled so I'll be excited to see what why numbers are now - between Atkins and taking my meds correctly. I'm looking forward to the day I can be like Sherri (she's my hero) and get off meds once and for all! Glad to hear your triglyceride numbers are good!

I have so much better control of my blood sugars now that I'm back on Atkins. It takes a little while to get used to how you feel with normal blood sugars but just hang in there and you will be feeling on top of the world in no time at all.
