Hi! I'm Deb and I was dx'd a type 2 this past June. I've been a member of this site since 2004, but now I fit into this forum. I have used the Atkins diet from time to time, but didn't stick with it because of the carb cravings and sheer laziness. Now I'm back and want to get serious about this. I have been low carbing since June, but I need more to get my #'s down further. My current A1c is 6.5, down from 13.3

What I need to know is how does a diabetic start on the Atkins diet safely?

Thanks for all the help and I'm looking forward to making many friends here.

As a fellow type 2 person, I have had no problem controlling my glucose since starting induction 7 weeks back.
my bs is 95-110 all the time now. This WOE has been a wonderful thing for me.

I just started it as written and it has been perfect for me. Think about this, if you BS is high, why would you continue to cram carbs in your mouth? It's the very thing your body doesn't need.

I take metformin 1000mg 2x per day and I never have blood sugar problems. It stays steady all day and all night. I have no surges and no dips. I have more energy than I know what to do with, and I owe it all to eating like this.

Hey baby, how do you like bald fat guys with no money?

Thanks for the reply Chef Kevin. I have the book and I'm trying to read it today. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be, but I'm getting it done.

I also have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Taking med for the BP, but none for the chol. yet. I was recently put on 'script vit. D so endo will address the chol. in 3 months. I'm picky about what to eat and tring to keep fats low.

you gotta eat fat, this is a fat diet.

65% of your calories should be from fat.
Insulin is the major player in all these problems including cholestrol.
I take 30mg of lisinopril a day for BP and will hopefully be off of it soon!

dietary fat is not the problem, it is the cholesterol made in your liver that is the problem.

Atkin is not a low fat diet. If you eat few carbs but don't eat much fat you will necessarily have to eat too much protein. Excess protein is converted to glucose which defeats the whole atkin plan. To learn about the Atkin diet I suggest you sign up for the course at:
