  • My Latest Numbers...

Hey folks I got my first blood work done since I was diagnosed. My H1AC (I think that's what its called) went down but my cholesterol stayed the same!

    H1AC went from a 12.5 to a 7.5 in two months!
My good cholesterol is a 22 (LOW and no change)
My bad is high (not sure the # I don't have the results in front of me)

How will Atkins effect my cholesterol? My doc gave me an RX for some meds but I would rather not take them for too long if I don't have too.

Good on ya with A1C, the glucose needs 90 days to clear the system for this test so if do one in another 2 months should be evne better, best to get it under 6.1 according to all countries except USA keeps their levles higher, dont know why or what it is exactly bu less damage when under 6.1 which is non diabetic.( means averaging out at 110)
need all chol tests to know how to interprete them but if HDL is 22 thats low and it will increase with eating aAtkins due to meats and with excercise.get all numbers and post as you cant tell with just those numbers.
Wow doc must be impressed wih A1C, we just shorten it to A1C, what you call it is correct.

check out the cholesterol forum as we have posted how you can use your Atkins to lower your LDL with slight changes in the foods you pick from the allowed foods as you move along the carb ladder and some supplements too you will lower TG and raise HDL just eating Atkins. you can effect LDL as well but genetics plays a big role in that number

Ok folks I have my numbers recorded. I took the recommended numbers off the test results report. Take a look and let me know what you think. Looks like the nurse told me the wrong numbers for my LDL. It got better! :icondance I am still worried about the HDL dropping. :sadblinky

Yes I have not been exercising as I should. It was hard to get motivated to do so because we have been dealing with depression after the loss of our boys. I am going to work on that starting today. What do you mean by ratio?

Hi,the ratio of hdl to ldl, they usually figure it out for you and it and the trig are most important.

I didnt know anything about your loss, I am so disheartened and sad for you, I don't venture off diabetic board as not much time so maybe you posted it there, never knew. take special care of you, although I did visit your site along time ago as I am a quadder. :hug :hug

oh boy While your total is great you need a lot of work on your HDL and your LDL is just slightly high for normal folk but high for diabetic folk and your Total to HDL ratio :yikes :yikes :yikes
healthy ratio is under 5 usually between 3 and 5 but you are at 8 :yikes
starting exercise should greatly help you with this. Eating meats will increase your HDL too just make sure you ate lean cuts so your LDL doesn't go up too.

Have you got any fiber in your Atkins eating? soluble will asssit in lowering LDL flax is good and so is psyllium. oat bran is great but it is a rung 9er of OWL. What happens is it binds up both the dietary cholesterol and the bile in the intestines and you can't absorb it. Bile is the ony means in the body to actually rid your blood vessels of cholesterol as the HDL returns it to the liver from those vessels after it has delivered to the cells the stuff they need it was carrying and the live creates bile out of it. The high fat Atkins eating causes us to excrete more bile then low fat high carb eating does becasue bikle is what breaks down the fats to allow them to be absorbed into the bklood and processed. by bink=ding them up the intestines will signal the brain and it will signal the gallbladder and liver to produce and excrete more bile lowering your LDL cool uh?

We can raise HDL by eatting HDL or by creating it from healthy fats like the OMega3. Monosaturated fats lower LDL too so watch your tyope of fat in your food and use monosats in your dressings and cooking choices.

Can't wait to see the next test in 3 months!

Ok to start, your post has me a little worried. Am in that bad a shape? I thought I was doing better?

Will flax seed oil work? I have the caps but stopped taking them a while back. I did the same with psyllium caps too. I am going to start taking them again tomorrow.

Lean cuts of meat? How am going to get my fats that way? Sorry but I am confused.

What about eggs? From what I understand they can raise HDL?

My fiber has been from some greens (salads and broccoli).

OMega3, I hate fish can I just take FISH oil? What else can I eat?

Should I stop cooking with butter and using mayo?

My doctor also has me on advicor. IS this a good thing?

Sorry for all the questions but I am a little worried... :no :no :no

he too is concerned about your LDL being too high and your HDL too low as that is a precription Niacin high dose with a statin drug. If you can tolerat it it will lower your LDL, raise your HDL and decrease your triglycerides.

The choise is yours you manipulate your Atkins food and exercise choices to raise your HDL lower your TG and lower your LDL and maybe not need the meds or you can take the meds and keep your atkins as is. Staitns are supposed to be good for diabetics heart health too not just clogged blood vessels.

You can still get your fats just use health monosat fats like olive or canola oils. and if you look at the leaner cuts of meat they still have a mixed lot of fat in them so you will be getting fat with them you just might need to brush them with a little oil 1T of oil goes a long way in the fats ratios. The fish oils and the flax oils will give your the EFAs to alter your numbers but not the soluble fiber effects too and remember the oil in those capsules should be includded in your daily food totals too.

Are you just starting the meds or have you been on them for a while?

I just started the meds last week after my test. The copay on them suckers is $50 :yikes for 30 tabs! I will do both as far as the meds and WOL goes. I figure I should get my numbers under control ASAP and then tweak. Thanks for your help! again!
