I need some help. I'm diabetic and on insulin. I've been in the introduction phase of the Atkins diet for the past 18 days and have been able to eliminate the before meal insulin injections. My blood glucose has been stable at around 110. However, ketostick tests indicate only trace amounts of ketones in my urine (morning and evening). My question: Is the amount of ketone present proportional to the amount of fat being burned? My carbohydrate intake is as close to zero as possible. Any help or commets will be appreciated. Thanks

Since I'm fairly new to Atkins myself I'm sure that someone else will be more qualified to answer your question than me. However I did want to say that since being on induction for 6 weeks I have noticed that my keytones gradually built up from trace to large without additional changes to my diet. I also remember reading Dr Atkins saying that you are still burning fat even with a neg or trace result from the keytone stick. Hope that helps a bit. Keep going it's well worth it.

chagan, how are you doing? You haven't posted for awhile so I wanted to see how things were with you. How are your glucose numbers now? As far as the ketone sticks, mine rarely have any color (showing negative) but I have lost 26 pounds so my ketone sticks aren't really accurate. I have a new bottle and are still not really showing any color - no idea why!

I wish you well and hope you are still losing

Doing fine (I think). I've been able to stop taking insulin all together and my bg is always around 100. However I'm still on metforum and actos. I'm not due to see the doctor until May but I believe I'm down about 15 lbs (2 months). I'm still a little concerned about the ketostix however, they show small or trace usually. This may be an issue if I try to increase my carbs, but for now I'm keeping them under 10g per day. Thanks for checking in I appreciate your concern.

how much water do you drink each day? If you drink a lot that might keep the color from being real bright -- I have no color but I can tell by my breath that I am in keotsis. The fact you are losing is a good indiction you are on the right track.

I can't wait to hear what the doctor says in May!! Congrats on getting off the pump - that's great news.
