  • Cholesterol

I just went to my endo last week where they drew blood. I wasn't fasting or anything and didn't know they were testing my cholesterol. It was 202. Usually it's about 190 not fasting. I know that Atkins raises cholesterol initially...can anyone remind me of when I can expect it to go down again?? I've been on Atkins for about 7 weeks. Thanks!

    Re: Cholesterol

Dr. Atkins recommends having your blood tests done 6 weeks after you started the diet. While your total cholesterol increased, what happened to your HDL, LDL and triglycerides? The way cholesterol breaks down into these is more important than the total number.

What is a typical menu for you? Are you in OWL or extended induction?

      Re: Cholesterol

That was my question, what was your HDL and ratio?

Keep exercising for one! Exercise raises HDL which acts like a broom to sweep the 'bad' cholesterol to your liver and clear it from your body. 6 months of Atkins and exercise has raised my 'good cholesterol' 4 points!

Some foods too, like cinnamon and the spices in curry, have been shown to have a favorable effect on choesterol. I eat a little cinnamon every day.

        Re: Cholesterol

I will have to call my endo for the details and my past cholesterol levels. Now I'm curious! I am on extended induction with my husband. I am also diabetic on an insulin pump. I have about 30 more lbs. to go! Thanks for the advice!
