  • i have a question

if you have type 2 diabetes and you get to the point where your drug free with the atkins diet and such does that mean as long as you stay on the diet your basically cured from type 2 diabetes?

in other words do you get next to no ill effects? or no ill effects at all? from the disease type 2 diabetes if your on the atkins diet and reach the point of being drug free?

or in some people can it really cure cure your type 2 diabetes and make it so you dont have it anymore as long as you stay on the diet?

sorry i dont know much of anything about type 2 diabetes and before i tell people that the atkins diet cures type 2 diabetes i want to make sure that the word cure is the accruate word or if i should use something like cures in rare cases but for most people 100% controls the disease so no ill effects so basically a cure cause its a life long diet

    Re: i have a question

I don't know if I would go so far as to say you are "cured" because I'm not a doctor. I can only speak from my own experience - I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes last summer. My A1c was 10.3 when I began - I was sent to a nutritionist who gave me a low carb/low fat diet to follow and it was boring. I ate whatever I wanted and took my meds until January - then I got serious and started Atkins. I went to see my endocrinologist in March and my A1c was right around 6.0. At the time I saw the doctor I had lost 17 pounds so I was so excited that the A1C had gone down that much.

My meds were changed at that visit - my daytime meds were cut in half but my nighttime meds were doubled -- so it about evens itself out.

My blood sugar readings on January 1 were fasting 166 and evening 143. I have lost 29 pounds now and todays reading were fasting 92 - evening 102. Quite an improvement from January to April.

I know Sherri has gone from taking diabetes medicine to not taking any and has been off them for several years - she would be someone with better information than I can give.

        Re: i have a question

I believe the doctor calls it becoming 'latent' in the book. You would always have the propensity of becoming 'full blown' if you went back to eating sugar and the wrong carbs, but while controlling your carbs you will be saving your heart, eyes, kidneys etc. from the bad effects of diabetes.

Read and reread the chapters on diabetes. It's really marvelous that a controlled carb approach makes such a difference, as diabetes is a killing, life-altering scourge.

        (Imagood got it
        going on there!)
