Hi. Atkins can be done by people suffering from a heart condition (Dr. Atkins was a cardiologist, by the way). This diet is known to lower blood sugar, reduce blood pressure, decrease triglycerides, etc., so I believe it is exactly what you are looking for. However, to gain the benefits Dr. Atkins talks about, you'll have to do Atkins correctly. So you will want to read the book, "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution" (2002 ed.), especially Chapter 27. Maybe you did already, maybe not... I'm just pointing it out.

Did you talk to your doctor about this? If you don't feel comfortable telling him you are doing Atkins (misconceptions, blah blah), simply say that you'll stop eating sugar and white flour, and instead concentrate on unprocessed foods like vegetables, eggs, meat, nuts, legumes, fruits, whole grains, etc.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Am I reading that right? You're saying Atkin's CAN'T be done by someone with a heart condition???

Aaaah! Sorry! I changed the phrasing and forgot to change the words.

I modified the post now, to avoid any confusion. Thanks for pointing that out.

To the original poster. What I meant was: Atkins CAN be done by people suffering from a heart condition.

It is IMPERATIVE that you do any type of diet/exercise modification under the guidance of your doctor! You cannot rely upon the opinion of people on this board when it comes to something so critical.

As to whether Atkins can be done by someone with a heart condition - yes, indeed! My uncle (who is only 57), drove himself to the emergency room with chest pains on his way to work one morning. They admitted him, and found that they had to do a quintuple by-pass! Once out of the hospital, his doctor promptly put him on the Atkins plan.

Having said this, I must stress once again - ANY DIET/EXERCISE MODIFICATION SHOULD BE DONE UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF YOUR DOCTOR!

          Best of luck to you!

Re: 23 and had a heart attack

I am Type 2 and am having trouble understanding why your A1C is 14 - are you on medication for diabetes or is it just unhealthy eating that got it up to 14? When I was diagnosed mine wasn't that high, but when my husband was diagnosed he was up there - he had triple bypass 3 years ago, 2 stents implanted 2 years ago and a ICD (difibulator) installed last year.

Make sure your cardiologist and endocrinologist know you are on Atkins we state over and over that we don't have enough medical knowledge to diagnose anyone. My husband's doctors told him to get on an exercise program, watch your foods and drink plenty of water, you will start loosing and seeing improvements in the diabetes and how much easier your heart is working soon.

I wish you luck on your weight loss.

I intend to lower my blood pressure through weight loss as being overweight is a major contributing risk factor that creates and maintains high blood pressure.

BUT.. where did you see that the diet is "known" to lower blood pressure?

I'd like to see that information.

This is one study that compared four different diets -- Atkins, Ornish, Zone and LEARN: JAMA -- Abstract: Comparison of the Atkins, Zone, Ornish, and LEARN Diets for Change in Weight and Related Risk Factors Among Overweight Premenopausal Women: The A TO Z Weight Loss Study: A Randomized Trial, March 7, 2007, Gardner et al. 297 (9): 969

There are several others showing the effects of a controlled carbohydrate diet on blood pressure, blood lipids, etc.

Re: 23 and had a heart attack

hi palms86 let me start off by saying the Atkins diet is GOOD it helps cure many illnesses one being Heart Disease

if you want to become healthy and cure your Heart Disease then do this

                    1. Learn about the Atkins diet Properly spend lots of time learning about it and do everything 100% accurate

                    2.
Reversing Heart Disease, Heart Attack, Coronary Artery Disease, Stents, LDL and HDL Cholesterol., Lifestyle and Diet Success Stories.

read everything at this website it will explain clearly how to reverse your heart disease and effectively cure it

remmber to always avoid omega-6 polyunsaturated vegetible oils and take omega-3 instead and becareful not to overdose on cod liver oil because it has mass ammounts of vitamin A and D so takeing normal fish oil after you have had about 2 tsp of cod liver oil for the day already would be good

avoid all types of soy as well

remmber dont get lazy you must read everything and learn it and do it accurately

and also do not discontinue medications without your doctor's approval if you have had a heart attack

the Atkins diet is great for type 2 diabetic's as well its one of the best things you can do

and ya any diet/exercise modification should be done under the supervison of your doctor. but you can stop eating omega-6 polyunsaturated vegetible oils and soy and start takeing omega-3 right away
