came off the diet went up and down with the sugar this time it has stayed up I have had stress from hail .... and now am really afraid i have taken it to it's untimate edge of sugar yuckies...
Will spill the story and by the way i'm fine okay...
A YEAR ago I lost my 18 year old son to a drunk driver... at that point I was at my all time high weight and probably everything but at that point wasn't on top of it ...my all time weight is 288 phew what a big number..
my sugar could have been out and most likely anything ... I have a pace maker the next month after my sons death I had a new pacemaker put in cause I killed the other one... Okay Not a boohoo story here okay just sharing it all ...
last month thought I had phnemonia I know i probably spelt that wrong anyways ... went to E.R. twice and my reg dr. had taken several antibiotics and still couldn't breath was also smoking from the stress.. ended up in the e.r thinking i had the phn thingie and it turned out to be congestive heart failure .... I now have got insulin resistance was taking metformin 4 pills a day... and glimepiride and actos and actos helped me to induce the congestive heart failure came off of it and went to januvia still didn't move my numbers staying in the 240's so we went to insulin started on it on wednesday of this past week.... today i quit taking it ... i'm going to do the atkins diet and see what happens .... now i am taking the metformin and will take this but i'm not taking the shot .... my numbers were still in the 240's even while taking the shots.....(please don't write me to bless me out .... )Im curious if anyone else has had the insulin resistance and came down with atkins.... oh and forgot to mention this one also my blood count is way up there going to get a bone marrow thingie done to see if i'm produing to much of it .... dr says that might help i don't know..... if you have had these symptoms feel free to write back...

hi and welcome Kimee!!! I'm so happy you found ADBB and are on the plan. It sounds like you have had your hands full the past few years but all this can be changed around and a healthier you can come out of it.

There is a diabetic thread here you might want to post on -- Diabetes & Atkins Low Carb Living - Atkins Diet; there is also a century club where they do a morning roll call to keep everyone on track.

I wish you much luck -- I am trying desperately to get off the diabetic meds I was put on along with blood pressure, cholesterol and high trigliceride medicine that at the time it seemed easier to take a pill to "get over it".....little did I know that didn't work. Now a few years older and wiser I'm trying to change my health to make the rest of my life fall in place.

If you need anything please ask -- we are all here to support each other. Start exercising today - go for a walk, climb stairs, dance around the living room -- whatever you can do -- do it! Drink plenty of water (at least 64 ounces of pure water daily) and eat only foods on the acceptable food list. Good luck to you!!

Here are links to help refresh your memory and for some really great recipe sites!

    Rules of Induction:

    Induction Acceptable Foods List:

Exercise is not an option – it is mandatory ….. don’t say you can’t --- start today!

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the 14 day Induction area:
Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
    Filtered water
    Mineral water
    Spring water
    Tap water

Additionally (after your 64 ounces daily), you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
    Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
    Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.
Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases.

We all seem to be in the same situation(boat). My bs has substantialy come down from 200-300. It is now 90-120. I am also on Metformin 1000 2x a day, glyburide (which the Dr. reduced) and 28 units of Insulin down from 34-36 units of lantus. I have A-fib, diabetes 2, Osteoarthritis (major) good things do happen when I am on Atkin. After my last AlC my bs went from 7.7 to 5.8. I stick to the low carbs and do not go off for any reason. My desserts are sugar free cheese cake or ice cream with 1 oz of cream and a little water frozen. I do use Splenda and a drop of vanilla. I have come to love the diet even though I miss all the goodies. I have done Atkins twice and this time my weight loss has slowed down considerably but my diabetes has really come to a point that I can see the end of the tunnel. I hope all are well and continue to have confidence in this diet. I am surely going to give it my best. My weight has only dropped 14 pounds in 4 months but I am happy how I feel. Audrey

The metformin, glyburide & insulin are keeping you from loosing faster than you do (I know from experience!!) but just remember when you loose the weight it's gone for good!

Great news on your A1C - that proves you are doing the right thing. Keep up the great work - move on to Owl Rung 1 when you can, added the additional 5 net carbs of veggies is really nice. Continued good luck to you!

Re: insulin resistance and newbie ... sorta

This week the Doctor reduced my glyburide, hopefully I will soon reduce my Metformin. Patience is my nemisis. I will drink more water and tweak my diet a little more. Next week I will have my fitday reviewed again and see if I have it right. Thank you for all the support I am receiving.

Metformin was one of the things that really pushed me into Atkins. I was put on it, and it just so completely floored me... I mean, I was sick, could barely move, ect. It was HORRIBLE. And I started thinking about it like this "hmm... so they give me these horrible pills so that I can better metabolize carbs. So what if I just don't eat the carbs and chuck these nasty things?" So I read up on it, found Atkins, and for years now my bloodwork has been absolutley perfect.

(I realize others may not be able to do what I did, but that's my story and it did work for me! I'm not really good about doing anything my doctor tells me to though.)
100 pounds gone forever from 12/03-11/04. Thank you Dr. Atkins, may you rest in peace...

Re: insulin resistance and newbie ... sorta

I am heading toward cutting back my metformin and hope I get there soon. I am sure it will help boost my weight loss. I will say "my bs is almost perfect". When it is perfect for a week or two I think I will cut back on my meds some more. I have recently had my glyburide reduced by my Dr.
