  • an evil medication

Ok, I've been testing for 3 days and the scores are not good. All high. From 139 all the way up to 209. Crazy. I shudder to think what the numbers would be if I wasn't sticking to Atkins. So I found some of my dead husbands old medicine - metformin and took two. Now I've been running to the toilet all day and I'm nauseous.

this may be worse than being exhausted. lol...

I'm meeting with a doctor on Tuesday to beg for care and meds. I hope I look and sound pitiful enough to persuade her to give me something besides metformin.

why can't chocolate be the cure for diabetes? and while I'm fantasizing here, why can't this darn diabetic thing just go away?

Tabe, don't take old and possibly expired drugs. They can't be good for you.

the runs are a side effect for new folk to metaforin and will go away with time.

Desertthorn is correct you should never take somebody elses meds as they are not titrated to your needed levels andtoo low a blood sugar is just as dangerous as too high.

Check your Atkins and check your protein intake as too much protein will be converted to sugars too. 30% of your toal cals should be protein and 60% should be fats it you ar doing OWL.

      Happy low carbing.

well read my other post, metphormin is the drug of choice for type II out of control, it is best one even in aktins book, it can cause runs in some and growling but disappears within few weeks. How old are the meds, are they in dark bottle, what dose is it, know now you saw doc so talk about it, on metphomrin you are not at risk like actos and others that create more insulin to have hi and lows unless you are exercising extremely and one beauty is it doesn’t cause extremes and for some has a side effect of weight loss, didn’t for me, I took it just before went to Spain and spent a month in Spain finding a bathroom wherever I traveled, did you know Alhambra didn’t have public toilets unless you left the castle and had to re enter, dam it was a long walk.

Invesitage for supplements as well, lots out there for diabetes but your numbers are too high for them right now, they work better when numbers borderline hi, Shawnee liked them and found they lowered his numbers but it takes months and he was fit, excercised faithfully so body became a metabolizing machine, created muscle which opens up cells tot ake BG out of stream, and had lost wieght and his numbers were just a tad up but it wont do it if numbers are hi hi.You'll be there eventually.Read some old posts and glean what you can.Have you read atkins book, chapter on diabetes???

          never could adjust to it

i tried to adjust to metformin for a long time. the doctor i had at the time said that if it was still upsetting my stomach after all that time it was better to switch to one of the other medications.

              Re: an evil medication

I was on metformin for 3 years and suffered daily from cramping and the runs. My idiot doctor said that it was almost impossibl to point the finger at the metformin for my gastro problems. Within 1 1/2 hours I would be b-lined for a washroom. I went to see an allergist for a different symptom associated with fruit and he managed to pin point my problems with a host of different foods and metformin. I stopped taking it immediately and no more bad belly. Metformin can mimic IBS symptoms, if you suffer from that- go see an allergist to rule out a drug/ food allergy. My life has changed dramatically!

As others stated in their posts, metformin can initially cause the runs. You may be a person who is the exception and not the rule when it comes to being able to tolerate metformin after a short period of time.

                  Re: an evil medication

I was not making any medical statements, I said that I had allergies to metformin and that if others experience the same then a trip to an allergist/doctor to rule out food alleries may help. I wish that 10 years ago when I began to suffer with this that someone would have pointed me in that direction, instead I endured 10 years of ****. I am not saying metformin is not a godsend for many (my mom is on it and does well) but there are other drugs available when metformin just wont work. Thanks.

                    Sorry for any misunderstanding, GotWadda.

True, metformin (like any other medication) may not be for everyone. What I really meant was that your medical professionals are the ones who should be able to recommend what alternatives you may have.
