  • getting over low sugar question

Today was a low day, my blood sugar dropped to 60 which is very low for me. I had been keeping to my low carb count of less than 20 carbs and today I had just a salad with some veggies. question is "to bring my sugar up to within normal range I had to cheat and have 2 ritz crackers with peanut butter. (boy, did they taste good" Does anyone know a different low carb item that does not contain sugar, to get my sugar up a little. My BS is usually around 90-100 at night and I still have to take my insulin. Tonight I omitted it because my sugar was so low.

Does anyone else have this problem and what can we do about it?

Also, I have to announce that I lost 4.5 inches off my waist, Will the weight follow? My best, Audrey

Re: getting over low sugar question

What about trying a spoonful of just the peanut butter without the crackers? Should be enough to raise your sugar without the side effects of the crackers.

I should not have had the crackers to raise my sugar. Sometimes I eat a few almonds if my sugar is below 70. When I am off on my sugar at night, I am afraid to take the insulin and then my AM sugars shoot up. I like to have it at least 90 before I take any insulin. Next time I will eat the tbls of peanut butter without the crackers.

I usually take a tablespoon of cottage cheese or a string cheese, I've also eaten colored peppers -- that works for me plus it's rung 2 food. The peanut butter doesn't work as well for me but maybe a half ounce of almonds would work - they are a rung 3 food. Maybe going up to another rung would help you - more "legal" foods to choose from.

Old habits are hard to break - especially when you need to get your sugar up. My uncle was told orange juice and Nila wafers....when I was first diagnosed I tried that and threw them back up - it brought my sugar up too quickly and make me sick to my stomach.....that's when I had to find what worked for me.

Re: getting over low sugar question

I am going to try going up 1 rung. I will read the book and list of legal foods on the 5 carb list. I am pretty sure I know them but always good to re-check from time to time. You are right about the orange juice, it really spikes my sugar. I have had tomato juice in small amounts. I also have had a small glass of milk about 3 oz. and it has worked. Today everything is fine and my sugar is good again. 100 tonight.
          Thank you again, Audrey
