  • How many diabetics follow Atkins by the book?

How many diabetics folllow the atkins progarm in its entirety? Do you use the OWL rungs and add carbs? I MUST follow induction only. If I don't, I can't keep my sugar under control. Seems like OWL and maintenance gives me too many carbs to control my sugar.

I actually followed it scrictly the first 6 weeks, then I started adding carbs and following Weight Watchers combined with Atkins...It works for ME... Counting points keeps me under control. I don't eat any carbs past lunchtime. And my blood sugar is always good. Around 85-93 in the AM and 65-80 2 hrs after meals. I am still on one glyburide in the morning. Plus I am still losing.

I'm Type 2 - and have been following it by the book. I only have problems with my glucose going up when I've been ill (coming off 2 horrible weeks of cold/flu symptoms) - other than being ill my glucose numbers have been great. In January my A1C was 10.3 -- last month it was 5.0 so it proves it has been good for me.

Wow Carole that is a fantastic A1C #... that's what I am hoping for. I go into the doc tomorrow. It's been about 2 1/2 months since I started Atkins. My numbers have been great, just hope my A1C shows it!

Re: How many diabetics follow Atkins by the book?

I'm following Induction with less of an emphasis on carbs. Mainly because carbs effect my blood sugars really quickly. Last night, before dinner my blood glucose was 127. I ate 1 all beef hamburger patty and 2 cups of green beans with 2 tablespoons of butter/ All microwaved. Two hours later my bedtime blood sugars were in the 180s. This morning, my blood sugars were still above 160.

That really amazes me... green beans, who'd a thunk?

When I stick with meat, cheeze, eggs, and an occasional half an avocado or a small lettuce salad, I can keep my numbers between 110 and 130. That is with 1000 ug Metformin and 5 ug Glyburide. (But considering in JAnuary my blood glucose levels were consistantly in the 300 to 500 range, I'll live with it until it improves again.)

My beginning A1C was 11.2. After a month on Atkins it was 9.9. Hopefully, in July when I get it tested again it will be down below 6.

I'm currently using DANDR'02, Atkins Diabetes Revolution (ADR) and Jeff Volek's TNT Diet as my references. I'm also researching further into the micro & macro nutrients best suited to breakdown fat. (We can't forget the all important water... seems like I'm drinking enough to drown an elephant!)

ADR indicates that Diabetics may go months without serious weight loss until blood chemistry levels normalize. Until then, I am quite happily watching my overall health, energy levels and feeling of well being improve.

Re: How many diabetics follow Atkins by the book?

Well I don't seem to lose anything - I lost a few pounds quickly when I started induction, but now, I'm losing inches (everybody says so and my clothes tell me so too...) but my weight refuses to move down even slightly! It's very very "disappointing"... My blood sugars are not totally under control yet, they are "almost" good in the afternoon but I do get a lot of morning highs. I take no meds and no insulin. And at the same time trying to get rid of candida, so there's a lot going on )

I'm "testing" a lot - it seems BS levels are better in the morning if I don't eat later than 7pm, or even a bit earlier.

Perhaps I should try to eat my carbs with bfast and lunch, and only fat/proteins for dinner.

I guess it just takes a lot of "experimentation" before finding what works and what doesn't!!

Still waiting for my ADR book to be delivered (not available in Croatia...)

Then maybe it might make more sense!

Hey Forbey, you might want to take a look at Dr. Bernstein's Diabetic Diet Book. The website for him is WWW.diabetes-book.com. Since I have followed his 6-12-12 carbs, I have lost over 40 pounds and my sugars are between 90 and 105 always. Before, I had sugars as high as 294 with an A1C of 10.2! My HgAIC is now around 5.5!
