Re: Diabetic chat
Ok I'll start since I started the thread. I'm Carole, I've been on Atkins on and off since January 2009. I recently took off a couple months when I found myself floundering with my food choices and everything else in my life but as of this morning I'm starting week 2 of induction.
Here are what my numbers have been since I started back: (1st number is fasting - 2nd is evening)
4/19 138 - 99
4/20 132 - 132
4/21 126 - 112
4/22 119 - 119
4/23 129 - 116
4/24 122 - 116
4/25 122 - 114
4/26 119 - 110
Since restarting Atkins I feel much better. My bad eating didn't affect my A1C or blood work numbers when I had them last time (thankfully) but I'm not willing to take a chance and continue eating everything willy nilly and feeling crappy everyday.
I hope you'll come and post, encourage each other, help find answers to our questions, etc.Carole_____________________May Water 130oz daily

Re: Diabetic chat
I am so glad that you started this thread Carole! I think that it is a great idea to have this so that we can just chat about this WOE! I will try to get on here as much as I can, sort of busy sometimes around here.
Atkins has truly made a difference in my blood sugars, but it is so tempting just to go back to that old WOE, especially when your blood sugar goes down too low and you get that naturally cravings for carbs.
I have been re-reading the Atkins Diabetes Revolution, and I missed some things since the first time that I read it. I know that some people have the idea that moving into OWL is the best thing to do, but even in the book it states that some diabetics have to stay at 20 grams of carbs for quite some time while they get their BGs under control. That was encouraging to me, because I thought, well my 2 weeks are over I better move into OWL. And I tried and my BGs went higher than I wanted them to, and I was discouraged.
NO LONGER! I am going to listen to my body, and my MD, and she thinks that what I am doing is a good thing. I am going to increase my exercising, and also try to really keep track on my morning temps (for those wonderful estrogen levels). I was reading that many times that you will have an increase in blood glucose a week before menustrating. I just want to be able to know...okay this is not from the 3 oz of cheese you ate, it might be because of the hormonal surge.
Anyhoo, I have chatted for too long! Hope to see more Diabetics on here!
If you all know of any more challenges, I would love to join a water one and maybe the 6 week one!
TTFN!!!

Re: Diabetic chat
Hi Caroline - thanks for posting. You can join the water challenge - the link to it is in my signature line....the new challenge starts Saturday morning.
I made Linda's creamy alfredo sauce last night and put it over a cut up chicken breast. It was so good I just couldn't believe how easy it was to make or how wonderful the flavor was. It makes 6 servings and is 2 net carbs per serving.
Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes.
The hubs had a root canal yesterday over his lunch hour. He was ok until around midnight last night, then it got sore. Of course he waited to long to take any pain reliever so it took longer to take effect. This morning he was still hurting so I made sure he had a couple Tylenol in his system before he went to work.
My numbers the last couple days have been real good - it still amazes me how my numbers come down so quickly and how much better I feel because of it.
4/27 119 - 99
4/28 110
Have a great Atkins day!Carole_____________________May Water 130oz daily

Re: Diabetic chat
Carole ~
Ohh that sounds yummy, I will have to look into that recipe. I am also looking for new things to try, course it has to fly with the rest of the family also.
I am so sorry to hear about your husband. I hope that he feels better soon! OUCH!
Your numbers are looking wonderful! Good for you! Isn't it a wonderful feeling to "feel" better and not so sluggish and tired all the time.
Keep it up Carole! One day at a time, right?

Re: Diabetic chat
Well I ended up 110 fasting and 110 evening yesterday so I'm happy with that. This morning my number was 106 -- woo hooo!!!!
You are right Caroline - one step at a time -- one day at a day -- slow and steady for me. I finally decided to start a ticker and get it posted....I've hidden long enough - time to let everyone know that I managed to gain all but 7 pounds back that I fought so hard to loose last year.
I hope you have a good day.Carole_____________________May Water 130oz daily

Re: Diabetic chat
Hi there!
I followed you Carole
Today... finally... I hit a 40lbs weight loss!!! It's taken about 7 months...and it's still coming off slowly. But, I have around 15-20lbs to go.
My blood sugars have really stabilized, but I would like to see them lower. My fasting numbers are around 100-110... I rarely go below 100. So hopefully, losing 15-20lbs more will help with that. But, when I started Atkins in October 2009, my blood sugars were anywhere from 200-350, so I am happy.... and so is my Dr. I've also taken my cholesterol from 287 to 203. All my other blood numbers are now in a normal range. My last A1C was 5.8
Well, I hope to see more people posting on here!
take care!

Re: Diabetic chat
Carole ~ Great job! Good for you....YE HAWWWW!!! I know that it is hard to not want to hide, but no worries! The past is the past and you can't change it, but as today is a new day with no mistakes in it! Hang in there! Cheering for you.
Valerie ~ so glad to see you on here. I think that it would be great to have more people so that we can encourage one another. So please hang around and let us know how you are doing. So thankful to see that you A1C is 5.8....you go girl! I understand about fasting bloos sugars, have you been exercising? That really seems to kick a person's metabolism into gear.
I have joined some challenges, water, Route 66, 6 wec, and I was thinking about the mileage challenge also. I need long term and short term goals. (Oppss also the Presidential one, of which I was a slug last week :-( Bad me!)
I have my MD appointment in June, and I am so ready to have my numbers looked at, but sort of apprehensive at the same time. I know that I have done pretty well, and seem to be doing better lately. Although this week has sort of been hard for me, I think that I may have a touch of the flu, my body has been aching and I am fatigued. Not the fatigue feeling when your blood glucose is too high, but an achy all over fatigue. ugh!
TTFN, must run and get some lunch...thinking tuna?

Re: Diabetic chat
Thanks Caroline!
Yes, exercise id definitely the key. I have been gradually exercising more and more. I work on the 13th floor in my building, so the last two weeks a started a stair challenge. Up and down the stairs a flight at a time. (22 stairs per flight) Yesterday, I did 6 flights!!
But, I agree, it really does help!
Have a great lunch!

Re: Diabetic chat
Congrats on the stair climbing Valarie!!! I still waiting until next Wednesday to see if the doctor lets me start walking and stair climbing again. I never thought a broken toe could cause so much trouble. The last couple nights mom and I have taken Sadie (my dog) around the block slowly....it's just about all I can do to get back home.
I stopped eating the sugar-free jello and drinking diet rite when I found out it stopped my weight loss and kicked me out of keotsis. I know there are people who can eat it and drink soda but I'm not one of them! Once in a great while I can have a small amount of whipped cream but that is very rarely.
My numbers were real good today. Fasting was 106 and evening was 105. It probably would have been lower but I had a snack about an hour before I took it. I had a taco salad for lunch then we went to the laundromat to wash bedspreads so by the time we got home I needed something to tide me over until dinner. We had chicken for dinner so I took a serving of my alfredo sauce and put over it, broccoli and creamed turnips. I'm happy with my food choices today -- will have to figure out what we have tomorrow.
Night all!Carole_____________________May Water 130oz daily

Re: Diabetic chat
Oh no!! I'm so sorry to hear about your toe!! But it sounds like you are doing really well!! Those are great numbers! I've lost 40lbs and exercise a lot, but my fasting number is barely below 110 usually. But, I figure my A1C was ok, so I just keep going.
I am very lucky in that my husband does all the cooking. He is so good at cooking and comes up with the best things!! This week he came up with something he calls "Mizza" Like Pizza, but it was a pork chop with melted Mozzarella on top with Mushrooms, onions, peppers and tomatoes. It was soooo good!! He has really embraced low-carb cooking. although he isn't diabetic or overweight. He just says that he feels so much better when he eats low carb. He had to start adding in extra carbs though because he lost 10lbs without even trying
Well, I hope everyone has a wonderful Friday!
Take Care,
Valarie

Re: Diabetic chat
Carole ~ OUCH! I understand that a broken toe can be painful. Hopefully it will heal quickly and you will be able to stair climb and walk some more. It sounds like you are doing great with your fasting sugars, and from what I see they are coming down aren't they?
Valerie ~ Congrats on the weight loss! YIPPEE!!
So nice that your hubby is helpful and even creative, I am sure that is a big help AND encouragement!
It is a beautiful day here in Ohio, although I think that it is suppose to rain this weekend, so I am thinking that I need to get a load of laundry out on the line.
I have been thinking about making out a meal schedule for myself. I usually have one for the children (since I homeschool, and they like to make the meals for breakfast and lunch). I think that if I do that for myself I can actually SEE the amount of carbs, and calculate them, and then spread them out over the course of the day. (It is just a lofty goal though sometimes~ I get great ideas, but sometimes find them hard to implement!)
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
