  • Coming Home Again to Atkins

I’ve enjoyed reading through many of the posts the past few days, and wanted to jump into this group with a quick introduction so I may move from the shadow of observation to the light of participation.

Five years ago I went on Atkins, losing from 250 to 200 in about six months. After using Atkins to lose the weight I went back to my “healthy” lifestyle of carrot juice, breads, veggies, tons of fruit and very little meat. In 2003 I found myself in a doctor’s office facing a diagnosis of adult onset diabetes 2. He found very little wrong with my diet, so he began medicating me, first with Avandia then Glucotrol XL, then Glucotrol XL combined with Metformin. As my fasting blood sugar began to climb so did my weight. A few weeks I ordered the Atkins book on diabetes published shortly after his death. It truly has been a Godsend. Everything clicked. So this past Sunday, April 24th, 2005, I began the road back to good health. At 6’1” and 275, my goal is to lose 75 pounds in a year, and to be off all diabetic medication in a few months.

Thanks to Dr. Atkins, and thanks to this board for providing a network of support.

    Peace and light!

      Hey, Page 152!

Hi, GC! Thanks for the welcome. I went back to the book to re-read your story, and it's one of the ones that caught my eye the first time around....I'm a sucker for Canadian B&Bs.

Congratulations on the success of the program, and thanks so much for the help you're giving your home town....Mrs. Low Carb, I like it!

All the best! John (Canuck at heart) in Texas

"i'll take a pork chop over glucophage anytime"

I like that, tabekat! In fact I did that very thing this morning to celebrate my 8 pound loss the first week....pork chops and scrambled eggs, then went for a brisk 3 mile walk.

Thanks for the note...I've enjoyed reading your past posts. Glad to make a connection.

          Cheers,

                Canada or bust!

Linda, thanks for the welcome! Glad to be here...

And, Canuck, in answer to the question of citizenship....I worked for eight years with a Canadian software firm in Ottawa, so I spent a lot of time in your fair country. Many of my Texas, aka George W friends, wish I would go back to Canada (or Massachussetts) when the subject of politics comes up. It's hard being correct in a sea of wrong...now I know how Dr. Atkins felt all those years. :yes

                Cheers, John

                  Hi John,

nice to have another guy here. Your story is so familiar, my BG was totally outof control and yet now it's normal with my doc reducing the meds and a chance of my coming off them completely soon

                  Nice to see ya

                    Hey Dave

Thanks for the welome, Dave! How long have you been on the program? I'm on day 15; the sugar cravings have been gone about a week now. In fact all cravings are gone. I eat a pretty good breakfast, but I'm not hungry the rest of the day. Curious if anyone else has that problem.

Again, glad to be on board, Dave....hope to hear from you again soon.

I hear ya John, I dont mention Georgie at my B&B nor let talk wander that way as people from every country of the world get upset. Its hard on the digestion of those pork sausages. LOL
I like a relaxed stress free environment. hehe

Yes when I first started and limited my carbs to under 30 I never got hungry but now I do as have gone thur all levels and I can get really hungry at times. but a pieie of cheese fixes me up till meal time or a bowl of lfaxseed porridge does the trick.....if not hugnry make sure and eat every two hr John to keep those BG stable or they will bounce.

one of the wonderful side effects of the deep ketosis *Dr Atkins term for fat burning not ketoacidosis y'all worry about) is that it suppresses your appetite during induction and the early rungs of OWL. As you progress on the plan you will add back more carbs the amount will be an individual thing based on your metabolism and your medical condition. The addition of more carbs lowers that appetite suppression as Canuck has seen

Trmember to keep checking in with your diabetic team because as your Atkins stabilizes your blood sugar levels without using much insulin your body will become more sensitive to the little bit you do have as many of ADBBs diabetics have seen and some actually become hypoglycemic till they got their meds lowered.

                        Happy low carbing
