  • BOdy Dysmorphic Disorder

Anyone heard of this? Well I was diagnosed with it this past week. I dont want to get into the great details but I think this is why I have never lost all the weight I wanted to. I have been yo-yoing for the last 5 years. And my dislike for myself has gotten out of control. For anyone who wants to read on this here is a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_dysmorphic_disorder. Any help??

      Re: BOdy Dysmorphic Disorder

I've heard of it. At least a million times!

It's when you see yourself differently than everyone else. Most anorexics are diagnosed with it, because even when they starve themselves to emaciation and you can see all their bones, and they look sickly, when they look in the mirror, they still see a fat person...literally, they see something different.

I've always thought I had reversed body dismorphic disorder...where I see something in the mirror that looks better than what everyone sees. It may sound funny, but it's true. It may sound like a blessing, but it's not. It allows me to gain weight without recognizing it. The mirror tells a different story than pictures do. I see a completely different person in the mirror, than i do in pictures.

I can look in the mirror, before going out, think i look really good, and think i look a certain size. then later see pictures of the same evening and think "omg! who is that...that girl is fat!"

        Re: BOdy Dysmorphic Disorder

        Hi there,
I think I must have the same thing. Never been diagnosed, but I have read a little bit about this.
I also look in the mirror and think I don`t look that bad, but then when I see photos of myself later, I can`t believe what I look like. I`m so huge and disgusted with myself!
Yesterday I was looking at the before and after threads (there are so many wonderful success stories on here!) and got the idea that I would get my husband to take some `before` photos of me. I couldn`t believe what was staring back at me from the computer screen, especially the view from behind! yikes! I was truly in a state of out of sight, out of mind.
I`m just restarting Atkins (Day 3 - yay!), so I plan to have my husband take new photos of me every month so I can see how I`m doing.

          Re: BOdy Dysmorphic Disorder

I have heard it..and I think I have this too. When I was 20 at 130 pounds on my 5'7" frame I thought my body was just grotesquely fat. I was diagnosed with bulimia way back then too....I think the dysmorphic disorder often goes along with other eating disorders. I have not had bulimic episodes in years...but the body hatred thing continues. I will tell you one thing for sure - our society and the media have helped to create these disorders in us because everyone is so critical of appearance and all the airbrushed models in magazines make women (and men) feel that we have to be "perfect".

I had that after i lost weight on atkins the first time, i think. I weighed 135 (had alot of muscle and not much fat) and when i looked in the mirror i looked fat. Heck when i even looked down at my legs they looked huge (didnt help that i had chisseled calf muscles that would put any man to shame lol). Everywhere i went i felt insecure like i was the fattest girl in the room. Now i look back at the pictures of me and i was skinny.
