Okay, I HAVE to join this challenge! This is the coolest thing I've seen for a while and I'm so excited to do it. I used to live in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, so I've decided my first climb will be Mt. McKay. It's 1585 feet high. I wanted to actually climb it while I lived there, and I was suppose to go there this week for a vacation and was planning to climb it, but we had to postpone our trip.

When I calculate the steps and flights it's going to be 3011 steps and 201 flights and I'm hoping to start tomorrow. I have no idea how long I can expect it to take as I haven't been doing stairs, so I'm going to get the first week in to calculate my baseline.

            Woo! So excited!

Hiya Tomorrow! Welcome to our climbing world! You'll find this challenge very addictive, I'm willing to bet!

If you look at the first post of this thread, you'll see all the instructions for the challenge. The climbs listed there will qualify you for an award for your siggy, when you complete a set. But, if you want to start on a personalised climb of your own, I'm sure Jimmie (our fearless leader) would be happy with that. Lots of us have done climbs of our own (i.e. not in the sets) before, but mainly after we'd already completed all the sets. I don't see that matters though... it's the steps that count and the exercise we get from them, isn't it? You can see how to calculate the height of the mountain into steps/flights in the first post.

Jimmie isn't around at the moment to welcome you and, as far as I know, will probably be away for a little while.

Until she gets back, I'll wish you happy climbing of Mount Mckay. Cool pics of it btw!
                Before and after:

nice to have you joining us!
mount mckay is not on any of our current lists of mountains but you can go ahead and "climb" it, it just won't be calculated in to any of the awards that are given at the present time.
as carole mentioned. you can take a look at the first post of this thread and by clicking on the links, you'll see the climbs that will gain you the awards.

Ready to move on when y'all are (though I think Susan is fast disappearing into the distance above!)
next base camp is ..... well it was suppose to be 1800 and then 2000 but susan is leaving us in the deep snow drifts of everest. she is the one leading the way and setting the pace. lets, you and me, meet up at 1800 base camp.

i'm here! but it still won't be any kind of quality time, i'm afraid. as always, you are doing a great job with your stair climbing!

while i was in transit between houses and literally, between floors, i managed to finish off slieve donard and made base camp [1600] on everest. i'm at 1669 right now.
jack is at 649/2028 mont blanc.

i'm going to have to back track a little as i think i carole finished a climb while i was gone. i don't want to miss adding that to the chart!

                      • Re: PLEDGING FLIGHTS *** A Stair Climb Challenge

Hi all, thanks for the "hellos". I'm not worried about the award part of the challenge, it was more that I liked the concept of it. When I was a kid my mom would ride her stationary bike across Canada and the states and would track her progress on a map in coloured markers. She did the routes of places we had traveled as a family and let me tell you, she logged a ridiculous number of miles that way.

So, I've calculated the steps for a mountain in every province of Canada (plus the three territories) except for Prince Edward Island, which doesn't have a mountain, but only the highest point of the Island, and that's my goal. I'll make my own award if I need that kind of motivation. I even have my mom doing Mt. McKay with me doing her stairs at home.

I took the examples from the British Heart Foundation and the calculations came in closer using a multiplier of 1.9 rather than 2.0, so I went with that.

Unfortunately, I don't have stairs at my house. Sigh. And I haven't been able to get to the gym when they have staff there to get my membership. It's a 24 hour gym with limited staffed hours. I'll try again today. I did however manage to get 4 flights using random stairs. At least it's a start!

                        4/201 flights toward Mt. McKay

Am still dragging in your footsteps on Everest, but looking forward to catching up at 1800. We can point a telescope at Susan above us!

                          Carole.... good climbing, pal!

Tomorrow.... 4 is good; much better than a 0 before the challenge Plenty of time to increase. I found that after a while I bought an aerobic step to up the numbers because I wanted to get more climbs under my belt. Like I said before... an addictive challenge.

I finally got the gym to get my membership today....but not the one I was hoping for. That one didn't have any step machines! So I headed off to the next closest one and they have every machine known to man, plus all the group class programs are included in the monthly fee. I'll take it.

So....38 flights for me today! Plus a circuit on the weight machines. I'm gonna feel this tomorrow! Oh ya, and 2 flights yesterday at the mall, so make that 40.
