  • BEGINNERS: Couch to 5K Challenge

I hope I'm in the right forum. For those of you couch potatoes like me who want to learn to run...and who also think it's impossible...come join us!

This challenge is for true BEGINNERS...those of you whose heart and lungs feel like exploding when you jog for as little as 30 seconds. We're with you...we're feeling your pain (literally). Together, we hope to improve our cardio/respiratory endurance. We're going to take it slow, I promise, but we WILL make progress, right?

The plan we're going to use is a modified version of coolrunning.com's "Couch to 5K" training guide. We may not move as quickly as they suggest, but we will eventually get there. Here is a link to the plan: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

OK...post your commitments and your progress and thoughts. For you successful runners, come give us some support (we need you!).

FIRST...this week: Check in with your healthcare provider and get his/her approval (so when you THINK you're having a heart attack when you begin running, you can be somewhat confident that it's not REALLY a heart attack). Also, go get a pair of appropriate running shoes. This is not an easy task, but it is important to help avoid injuries. The heavier you are, the more important is your footwear. I'm not kidding. Expect to spend $40 to $140. Use these shoes ONLY for running (they'll last longer than if you wear them as everyday shoes).

We'll start week one on August 12th. In the meantime, WALK briskly for 20 to 30 minutes at least five times between now and Aug. 12th. Map out a safe path or track...smooth, flat, well-lighted, etc. Try to measure distances so you can measure your progress. Use this time to mentally prepare.

Are you ready? Just think...by Christmas we could actually be RUNNERS!

    Let's go!

Jamie, I'm not still a beginniner, but it hasn't been long since I was one! I vividly remember the chest-exploding-I-might-throw-up feeling. In fact, I still have it sometimes. I'm so pleased to see you're starting this challenge -- what a great idea!

Guys, if I can run, anyone can (unless medically unable). And I started walk/running around 240 pounds, so don't say you're too heavy! Have fun, you guys. I'll look forward to reading about your progress.

OK Jamie - I'll give it a go!

At present I only use the treadmill occasionally when I go to the gym as I prefer doing weights, but will start with the 'brisk walk' for 20 minutes plus on Friday which is my next gym night.

Can you do this on a treadmill? I have one and know that I would much prefer to use it rather than doing this outdoors...for now anyways.

Treadmills? I assume you can use one, as long as you can increase/decrease the speed as needed to accommodate the walking/running intervals.

Re: BEGINNERS: Couch to 5K Challenge

Sure, you can definitely use a treadmill. A good beginning jogging speed is about 4.5 MPH... or even a little slower, if you prefer. So, do whatever your normal walk pace is for the walking segments (or a little slower, if you need to catch your breath), and then increase to 4.5(ish) for the jog segments. The great thing about the treadmill is that it's easy to watch the time. The bad thing about the treadmill is that it's easy to watch the time.

                  Thanks for that tip, Adena

I shall be doing mine on the treadmill too, Strudel.

OK, guys...I made a siggy graphic for us. I have no idea how to share it with you, but I uploaded it to the ADBB Gallery. Maybe you can just cut and paste from my signature?

I am SO IN! WOO HOO, JAMI! Thanks for making this thread!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am walking 2 miles per day right now (on day 5 of induction) and so far, so good.

I'm going to start the jog/walk this coming Saturday because I am having minor surgery on August 13 and I'd like to be "into" this a bit so that I don't put off running afterwards.

Jamie -- that is an adorable siggy graphic! I actually plan to get a (small, privately placed) tatoo when I get to goal, and it's going to be a turtle because my losses are slow and my running is slow -- but sure.

4.5mph to begin with jogging??? Adena, your a running nut (saying that lovinly).

I'm on week 1...and tomorrow's work #3...so far so good, but I do my on a treadmill and walk at 3mph and jog at 4mph. I probably COULD do faster, as Adena figures a "good" beginning speed to be.

I actually find that I can watch my time better on my treadmill. I have a clock that counts minutes and seconds, so it's pretty easy to see the time intervals tick by.
