  • checking interest for triathlon swim portion challenge

    Hi Everyone,
One of my long term goals when starting Atkins was to someday compete in a triathlon. I used to swim competitively during my teen years. (I am 33) Since swim portion for me will be the easiest to train for I was thinking to create a challenge for the swim portion of a "Sprint" triathlon.

I am just throwing some ideas here all inputs welcome!!

    I read this today
    http://swimming.about.com/od/triathl...hlonswim_2.htm
Determine a Goal Time for Your Triathlon Swim
    ---------------------------------------------
To set a goal time for your triathlon swim, determine your threshold swimming pace per 100 meters, add 5% to 10% for navigation problems and to compensate for the lack of walls, then multiply that by the race distance. This time should be relatively accurate, barring any major kicks in the stomach by passing swimmers.

For example, if you can hold 1:50's in the pool, then you should be able to hold 2:00's in open water. If you are doing an Ironman (3,800 meter swim) multiplying a 2:00/100-meter pace by 38 = 1:16:00
    ----------------------------------------------

    Then read this
    ---------------------------------------------
    From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triathlon
    Standard race distances
    Sprint
    Swim
    750 m
    (0.5 mi)
    Notes:
... The Sprint Distance is the fastest growing triathlon race distance in the United States
    ----------------------------------------------

    My notes:
    =======
    - Most YMCA swimming pools are 25 yards
    - 750 m = 820.209 yrd or 32.80836 pool lengths (about 16 laps)
    - From above formula my personal goal as I think I can hold a 2:00 pace per 100meters
2:00/100-meter pace by 7.5 = should be able to complete 750m in 30 minutes
    - I actually think my holding pace could be 20% less if not that could be my challenge/goal 750m under 30 minutes.

I love a good old exercise challenge, however I can't really swim. I can probably swim about 15 metres at best!

      Good luck with yours though.
