  • #14 Weekly Pedometer Challenge

Just pledge how many steps you plan to take this week and report back here throughout the week with your numbers. The daily recommended number of steps is 10,000, but it doesn't matter if you aren't there yet. You will be!

Here's some info about pedometers from http://www.pedometers.org/Pedometer_Benefits.html

"What's a pedometer? It's a simple electronic device you wear on your waistband that counts steps. Technically, a pedometer calculates distance, as opposed to a step counter, which only counts steps. The pedometer still counts steps, and uses a user-input stride length to calculate the distance. Other pedometers show calories burned, elapsed exercise time, steps per minute, and on and on. All you really need is something that accurately counts steps. Other features can be nice, but many are not necessary.

Why is it important to count steps? It's a primary indication of the activity you are engaged in during the day. Studies have shown that you don't need to dedicate a specific time to exercise, per se, but smaller bouts of activity can have the same effect as one longer, extended period.

That means that making small changes in your daily routine can have tremendous effects on your health. Park farther from the store, take the stairs instead of the elevator, pace while you're on the phone, walk with the dog instead of just letting her go, and go down the hall instead of sending an e-mail or picking up the phone.

By taking more steps-essentially increasing your daily activity and burning more calories-you are becoming more physically active. The American Medical Association says that by increasing your activity level, you will:

    Increase stamina
    Stimulate weight loss
    Lower blood cholesterol
    Lower blood pressure
    Improve self image
    Improve mood
    Enhance quality of life"

    Re: #14 Weekly Pedometer Challenge

I'm sticking with 53,000 again for this week. I may be cutting down on some things for a week or so, haven't been feeling great and think I may need to rest a bit more--but walking seems to make me feel better, so I'm going to keep this up.

    Thanks, Jimmie for doing this!

    I miss Cyn, too.

I'm still out of it this week as my knee is still too sore to do more than everyday walking. Hope to make it next week.

Tks Silly and Caryl... I'm gonna try to take it easy, but will be going to the Aeolians Tuesday (a work trip) and you know how it is when you travel... carting cases all over the place.
The pain was subsiding nicely the first couple of days, and x rays showed no breaks, but have a horrid feeling I might have to have that cat scan done after all, down in the islands (if they'll do it, that is), as the last couple of days the pain has been no better and I still get the funny clunky noise when moving my leg certain ways. Beware supermarket carparks everyone... there are some dangerous drivers there as well as on the highways!!!

I'll try to pop in on y'all, to see how you're doing, if my new travelling internet connection works on our island. Fingers crossed.

Better to have the cat scan done so you can really see what's going in the knee! Have you had one before? Piece of cake, which doesn't sound legal does it?

Piece of ground almond cake with sweetner!
Yes, Silly... I've had the odd cat scan done before and you're right...better to see what's what. Just not sure if they'll do it down there, as I'm resident in another Italian region... bureaucracy here is awful. If not, will wait until I get back home. Can still function, just a little more slowly. Call me Cassidy !

guys and gals, is there any need for me to be keeping total for everyone? seems like we've all done well with our own numbers, at least since i've been a part of this.

i would also say, if anyone who is constant in the challenge, feel free to start the weekly thread if i miss doing it. i ain't gonna poke anybodys eyse out for starting the thread.

sal, heal quickly! and hurry back!

Sunday--10,504--really trying to get house under control, walked all day just in the house.

I'm fine with keeping my own numbers, Jimmie--that's what my stat journal's for, right?
