  • Lord of the Rings Challenge - Calling all fans

I don't know about all of you, but I am a bit of a Lord of the Rings freak.
I love the books and I have the films (SEEs) memorised.

So I got really excited when I found this exercise idea. It's called Walk Middle Earth. It follows the paths that Frodo, Sam, and the rest of the Fellowship follow throughout the books. You pick a destination and then walk, jog, run, swim or whatever until you reach it. If you can measure it in distance, it can go towards this challenge!

You can see more here: http://home.insightbb.com/~eowynchal...Walk/walk.html

I'm starting with Bilbo's journey from Bag End to Rivendell in The Hobbit.
So far, I have 2/397 miles down.

    Who's with me?

I'm totally in it!!!!! I'm going to start with your basic journey...
From Hobbiton to Rivendell! It's about 458 miles, and if my memory serves me there were many an adventure on that journey.

Bring it on, hope I don't run into any Nazgul...ok I'm a dork, haha.

      Hi DroppingStones and IrishMum,

This is a cool idea! I have to admit I've never actually managed to finish the books, but I'd love to (I liked the films and saw the musical last year which I wasn't expecting to like, but really enjoyed). Perhaps I could do this whilst reading the books (finally)?

I have read the Hobbit though, so I'll start with Bag End to Rivendell I'll be mainly jogging, but also a bit of walking. I'm sick at the moment, but once I'm back to running I'll try and rack up the miles - but this is going to take ages!

Well I started my journey today. I walked about 1.5 miles. That's a lot for me plus it was all up and down hills...

I guess according to the journey from Hobbiton to Rivendell I managed to walk from Bag End to the west end and over a hedge...Then I went through a gate and into a lane and walked for a while.

Doesn't seem like that much seeing as the Hobbits walked 18 miles in 1 day... Of course if I didn't have anything else to do and the fate of the world depended on me then I guess I coul walk 18 miles, haha!

        Happy trails everyone!

Well I walked another 1.5 miles today, I even actually ran for some of it which is saying a lot for me. I've made it to the water and crossing it on a plank bridge, haha. How's everyone else doing with this challenge? Or am I the only one? haha!

I think this is an outstanding idea. I love the Lord of the Rings and plan on starting off to Rivendell this afternoon when I get home from work. How is it going for you so far?

It's been a little slow going for myself. I try to walk about 1.5 miles a day more or less. I'm up to 5 miles now. Still got a ways to go before I arrive in Rivendell... The weather has been really nice so walking outside with the baby has been nice.

I started off to Rivendell today. I made it two miles. Don't know how those hobbits made it 18 miles in a day. I will keep at it tomorrow and try to make another two or three. I'm really hoping this gives me that incentive to get rid of some really unwanted weight. I'm on the treadmill as the weather is still pretty cool here. How old is your baby?

Re: Lord of the Rings Challenge - Calling all fans

My baby just turned 1 about three weeks ago! I feel so old and proud all at the same time, haha.

I try walking on the treadmill when it's gross outside. The baby doesn't appreciaet that too much since it takes me about 30 minutes to walk/run 2 miles and she has to sit in her playpen the entire time. Good job on the mileage you got done today!

I was having trouble with our internet last night, so didn't get this posted. I managed three miles yesterday and am going into Tookland. I'm glad the fate of the free people of the Third Age doesn't depend on me. We'd all be speaking the Black Speech of Mordor by the time I get there. I'm hoping for four miles tonight. I'll have to see if my poor, tired Hobbit feet can go that far. Keep up the good work!!!

<Raises hand> LOTR nerd here...I may not know alot of the smally details but I love the movie and have contemplated learning elvish lol

So I am going to take on the role as Samwise Gamgee....not because i dont want to bear the weight of the ring, but because Sam is the fatter of the two lol. Hey they makes me wonder, IF they really did travel all that way why wasn't Sam really skinny in the end....hmmm perplexing.

                      458 miles:Hobbiton to Rivendell.
                      462 miles: Rivendell to Lothlorien.

                      470 miles: https://<span style="color:#0000ff">...t. Doom</span>

Now...lets see where is that thing <goes to find his pedometer> I will do this if I can find my pedometer....ah yes, there it is.

Ya know what, I just added up the miles (1779) and that would be like me walking home from College here in Texas to Home back in Wisconsin and then some! (Tx to WI = 1169 miles) WOW.

Hey Ben. . . every adventure starts with the first step. I'd better get walking or I'll never get anywhere before I stop and have a little supper. Hope to log another four miles yet today.

Hey Ben G, I actually know how to write in Elvish. I'm a little rusty in it but I'm just that big of a dork, haha!

Great job on your journey so far cleye! That's awesome what you have accomplished.

I've been a little sidetracked with my journey....I was distracted by some Hobbit friends and we went and grabbed a big dinner and a few drinks at the Green Dragon...

I'll continue my journey soon! haha!

Hey, I think it's AWESOME that you can write Elvish. Too cool! How did you ever learn that? I think about learning the language, but there isn't too many people around me that I could speak it with. No one is as big a LOTR geek as I am around here. I made it my four miles today and my Hobbit feet are killing me. I wish someone would sidetrack me for a couple of days. Better run, I mean hobble off. It's really fun having someone to take the journey with.

This is the best thread I have read so far here... just because it makes this difficult journey before me a little more magical. And "LORD" knows we can all use a little more magic in our lives.
                              I have chosen :
RAUROS TO MT. DOOM: The Journey of Frodo and Sam (470 Miles)

This was a difficult part of the journey, and i consider this the induction the most challenging part for me. Getting started is always tough. I love that Sam does not allow Frodo to go alone. Its kind of like me being on my journey and having all of you along with me.
SO I will log my miles... except in KMS... cause I am canadian!

                              Happy Travels everyone!
