  • I can't stress enough the importance of the right shoes

I know we've talked about this before, but it bears repeating.

If you are an avid runner, jogger, or even power walker .. keep track of the miles you put on your shoes. If you run primarily on concrete, your shoes will not last the typical 400-500 miles. Concrete is the absolute hardest surface and your cushioning will not last, even in the most expensive shoes. Run on asphalt or a trail if you can .. at least asphalt flexes a little. But still, I encourage you NOT to go over the 300 mile mark on concrete and never more than 500 miles on any other surface or you risk serious knee, ankle and hip injury.

For me, I have bony skinny feet. New Balance has been my brand since day 1 and my feet love them. I tend to overpronate a bit (meaning my feet turn inward, and I have found great success with the New Balance 991s and my latest pair I love even more, the New Balance 1221s. A treat for the feet! My miles are up in the serious range now (35+ a week) and these shoes just feel awesome. I run on concrete mostly because I'd be roadkill here if I tried to run in the bike lane of our asphalt roads.

Anyway, just a reminder to keep track of your shoe miles. They sneak up on you quick. Yeah, good quality shoes are expensive, but it surely beats being injured.

Always check online for the best prices. I get mine at www.onlineshoes.com, free shipping and no tax. Look there and see if they carry your favorite brand. Oh, and another thing, go to a store that sells the same shoes that you find online so you'll know exactly the right size.

    Good advice Betty!

In the uk, there are two German based stores - Lidl and Aldi - which do great 'specials' every week, and about twice a year it's running week and they do wonderful technical running shoes at around £10 to £13. They have all the standard features - good cushioning, coolmax, phylon-whatsit-
midsoles, stuff to stop you pronating, stuff to stop you supinating... You know - all the long words so it appeals to everybody. They seem really good, and as I have one foot that slightly pronates and another that slightly supinates, they seem ideal!

Another good place is http://www.sportsshoes.com/?id=170 which have a good range and also a cheap clear-out section. I just bought a pair of Puma Discovery for my son for £5, reduced from £40!

It is excellent advice, having good shoes is essential!

Last year I was travelling abroad for a while, and silly me, I only brought one good pair of tennis shoes, and didn't really think about it. I wore those shoes down to the fabric! When I got back home, my feet were aching every day, from when I woke up to when I went to sleep. Found out from my doctor that I had plantar fasciaitis, which has taken me five months to even reverse a little bit!

Better to spend money on new shoes every few months then to have your feet ache all the time. Trust me!

Did Atkins back in 2005 and went from 262 to 182!
      Starting Nov 4th 2009 again at 195
      First mini-goal: 187 by thanksgiving
Second mini-goal: 181 by Xmas trip to see in-laws in LA, size 14's!

Couldn't agree more. It's also important, in my opinion, to have your gate looked at to assess things like pronation. I'm a sever over-pronator and need motion stability shoes to run, even with my orthotics. I'm hooked on my Mizuno Wave Legend running shoes!

A question for you shoe experts.

I've noticed that the bottoms of my shoes start wearing on the outer most sides first. Does this mean anything?

What does pronate and supinate mean? Or point me to a web site that explains it to me?

          Thanks in advance.

Pbird -- I would suggest you take your shoes to a running store .. a store that specializes in running shoes ... and have them assess how your shoes are wearing. They should be able to suggest just the right shoe for your particular needs.

We're all different and to assume that all running shoes are created equal is silly. We need to be fitted with the shoes for our particular gait. A genuine running store should have no problem assessing your needs.

I agree with Betty. Check out the Runners World website. There is a section about shoes that gives you an idea of what those things mean.

I have been a long time fan of the Nike Pegasus. I started wearing them @ 10 years ago when I ran CC in high School. I would buy a new pair about every year/ year and 1/2. Now that I am becoming more active and I am intergrating running back into my life (2miles at 5am every morning this week in addition to my Tae Bo thank you very much.) :icondance I have a new love, Nike Air Rifts. I bought these for walking around in prior to a trip to London recently and they were wonderful --no blister etc. Since they worked so well for casual purposes I decided to give them a try on the path around our neighborhood pond. They are awesome!!!! So light, so comfortable. I love them. I would buy 20 pairs if I could. They are very hard to find, and you have to be careful of "fakes". Finding a new pair is my new obsession that has replaced binge eating!!! I forgot during my sloth how wonderful running makes me feel. Thanks you guys for being such an inspiration!!!!!!!!!! :hug I am thinking about getting a subscription to Runner's World. Does anyone subscribe? Is it worth it?
