  • I'm Back in training

For my home towns annual multi terrain 5k race.

Last year was the first time I entered and I finished 202nd out of 220 and finished in 28 minutes.

This years race is on Wednesday 13th July at 7.30. The only training I did for it last year was treadmill work. But this morning I thought I would try doing it a little bit differently so I drove 1.5 miles away from my house this morning so I know that to run there and back is 3 miles. Which is just short of 5k.

Now just 6 weeks to go.

I hope to beat my 28 minute time.

It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

Rich, I am SURE you will beat your previous time!! 5Ks are fun runs!!

What is the weather like in July there? I know here, its blasted hot ... and humid, which tends to slow me down a bit, but if you have great running conditions, that really helps!!

You got a heart rate monitor??

Betty, the weather here in England, in July could be hot, cold, rainy, windy. In fact it could be all of those options all in the same day.

Last year it was raining really hard during the 5k. It helped really as it meant that I didnt get too hot. The only drawback was that I was wearing glasses which kept steaming up. I needed a pair of wipers on them!

Oh and no I dont have a heart rate monitor, its something I have never bothered with. I use the ones that are built into the CV equipment at my gym.

            Hey "Richt"
Best wishes! I hope you make your goal! It's nice to have something to work towards isn't it?
I'm training for a bike tour that I will start a week from today. It will be a somewhat grueling tour (500+ miles for the week) but I am really looking forward to it. Call it a sort of 'boot camp' if you will. A real kickoff for my summer training!

            Be well-

Never bothered with? Rich, believe me, you NEED ONE, if you're going to become a seriously committed runner. I bought my Polar before I had *really* committed to running, but I figured by investing in one maybe I'd be more dedicated .. (they aren't cheap).

That was a year ago and I've burned 82,000 calories with it just by running. Because I have one, I can accurately KNOW how hard my body is working, how much fat I am burning, etc. See, the problem for most runners is, they run TOO FAST .. become anaerobic, and their lactic acid increases as a result and they burn way less fat. The key to burning fat is to run slower/longer, not faster/quicker.

An interesting thing about running .. if you work on building distance (no more than 10% increases at any one time), speed automatically increases over time. When someone first told me that, I was like HUH?? Didn't make any sense to me, but I went with her advice because she had been running for many years.

Well, it is true ... so, once I invested in the heart rate monitor, I kept to the strategy of increasing my distance and keeping my speed down .. (in order to burn more fat and increase stamina). I don't think I would have ever gotten to the point I am now (running 12-13 miles at one time) without her advice or the heart rate monitor.

When I first got the HRM, I realized I was running WAY TOO FAST. Most people who get one say the same thing. The HRM forces you to slow down and stay in your target zone, therefore helping you increase stamina, build endurance, etc., for the long runs that will come as you progress.

Sorry this is so long, but I so believe in HRMs as I know I wouldn't be a nearly 50 year old, former couch potato who is now just a few months away from running in her first 1/2 marathon without my beloved HRM!!

By the way, I have the Polar M61 ... Polar makes great HRMs and they are very accurate and reliable, even through the rain, the wind, the Florida summer heat and humidity, etc.

              Think about it!!

Betty, I also drive a convertable. I have a Mazda Mx5. I dont have any pics of me with it on file, but its very similar to the following. Apart from the fact that mine is a right hand drive.
I too absolutely adore driving with my top down, on those rare days here when I can.
