Hey All!
Well, I survived another Bike Ride Across Nebraska! It was a great trip and I was able for the most part to stay on Atkins!
I was especially able to eat Atkins while on my 100 mile day (However, that day got cut 12 miles short due to hail!) But it is not only possible but very easily done given some planning.
I was glad I took my Atkins shakes/bars and some low carb treats. I also took a portable cooler so I could take cheese along. I took mixed nuts along as well and did fairly well at lunch/dinner times.
For breakfast I would usually drink an Atkins shake or I would have sausage/eggs. If I was in a town where I could have breakfast at a cafe I would also add some tomato juice.
For lunch I could always find hamburgers and some salad. Dinner was a little more difficult but again I looked for the town cafe where I could order off of a menu.
Was I perfect? No. But since I was riding 70+ miles a day I knew that any extra carbs I consumed were burned up as soon as I ate them.
I was SO very pleased that I didn't drink ANY pop, didn't eat any 'junk food' (i.e. candy bars, m/m's, donuts, chips etc.) However, on a very hot day when I was trying to cool down my body I did allow myself to have some ice cream with fresh strawberries on top.
It was a very realistic time for me as far as Atkins was concerned. Again, there were times when I chose to eat non-Atkins choices but I maybe did that 4 times during the entire week. What impressed me was that I WANTED to eat healthy foods this time.
I did learn something about my body and Gatorade. They don't mix. I did drink some of that while on tour and my body swelled up like a balloon! It's going to take me a couple of days to 'drain'. There is so much sodium in that drink that it had an adverse reaction to me. I was wary of drinking it at first because of the sugar content but after a few sips (very hot day-it was very cold!) that didn't bother me. However, by the end of the day I would swell up! So, for me, that drink is off limits.
Glad to be back! I hope to continue to ride and exercise as I continue to lose weight and get back in to optimum shape for next years' tour!
