They have a 3k and a 10 k race here on July 16th I wan t to enter but which race should I do. It's for a great cause making money for the womens shelter and I want to be sure I'll finish. I also don't want to be dead last but, hey whatever it takes at least I am doing it. Do you think I could train for a 10 k by then or should I do the 3 k which would be easy.

What do you all think it woiuld be hard but, I could probably run most of a 10 k but, maybe not all of it LOL.

    Tell me what you think.

Sarah, what I was told by a veteran runner is, you shouldn't attempt a 10k (6.2) miles until you can run consistently for an hour. That was sage advice which I took to heart and worked up to a 10k for a YEAR before attempting it. I'm glad I did it that way. So I would opt for the 3k for now, and set your sights on a 10k next year ...

I just finished 8 miles in 85 degree heat and 85% humidity. Can you say sweating? I took it slow and it took me forever to finish, but at least I'm alive. Lots of water along the way!!

I feel great though!! Burned 800 calories and stayed in my zone for the whole run.

I was running 1 hour consistantly before I got sick BUMMER but all I can muster lately is 45 minutes and 3 miles so the 3 K would be ok I'm sure

That's a much safer alternative for now. Just continue to add time to your runs and pretty soon, you'll be all set for the 10k!!! A GOAL TO WORK TOWARDS!!!

            I finally did it!!!

Well guys, I finally plucked up the courage and went to the gym to learn how to use all those lovely machines :yes

I've put it off for ages as I was so scared of freaking out in front of people, but the instructor was lovely, and we were the only two in the whole building, so no worries, even if he did put me on the treadmill - I've had a mortal fear of treadmills and escalators all my life... I stuck to a gentle walk on the treadmill just to help calm my nerves, but had a good go on *all* the other machines.

I was worrying about not buying a multi-gym that I was going to grow out of in a year or two, but having seen how pathetic my attempts to lift more than the lightest weight on any of the gym machines were, I don't think that's going to be a problem. :nono And I thought I was pretty strong...

I was going to run the three miles back from the gym but my legs were muttering to me about abuse, so I just walked back to make sure they are still speaking to me tomorrow. I'll swear my arms have bulked up already! I'll leave it a day or two and see if I can go back for another go :yes

I do hope you are not too sore. My first go at the weights left me totally helpless the next day. But I am better now.

Upper body weights for me today and a 6:00 am run for me in the morning. It's been unbearable hot and humid here too, record breaking temperatures in fact (well over 100F and more like drinking the air). We're getting some thunder storms right now and finally some rain. I went to cheer on my training buddies yesterday. It was the triathlon I was supposed to be in but because my deltoid is ripped I can't really ride my bike. It was so exciting. I so wanted to join in...but the heat was brutal. My one friend made the podium and got a third place medal for her age group (40-49) so that was exciting. The support and comraderie at these events is really outstanding. Everybody just cheering everybody else on. There was a very inspiration woman doing the mini tri. She must have weighed in excess of 300 pounds yet she completed it. She walked the run, swam and cycled slow, but she did it and recieved a huge ovation when she came across the final finishing line. I thought it was great for the organizers to wait until she came in before handing out the prizes. It was so cool!

That triathlon sounded great! How cool for that lady who weighed so much to be out there! What courage!! GOOD FOR HER!

So glad you're finally getting rain, Diana. Hope it cools things off! Here, rain only makes it steamier ... although today, we didn't get any! Imagine that, no rain on an afternoon in June?? Probably because that tropical storm cleared things out for awhile.

No run for me today since I did 8 big ones yesterday. Tomorrow, at least 6 maybe more. I'll be running at mid-day with the running club from work. My workout bag is by the door ready to go!!

HIIT intervals this morning. I figured it was about time to start mixing up my running. So I jogged for about 5 minutes, then did about 20-25 second sprints then walked until the top of the minute. I did that for 16 minutes, then a 5 minute brisk walk cool down.

I really pushed it on the sprints. I had plenty of wind but my legs are jelly. I think I need to do more of these and I also need to (not want to) start adding some hill work (did I really just say that?).

One race I have picked out is the Boston half-marathon in October. There is no qualifying and I have four months to train. Even if I have to walk some of it (which I don't want to) I will finish it. I am looking for a few other races for this summer, but I'm gonna be busy building my garage/master bedroom. So we'll have to see how my training and races fit in to my schedule. Never mind the fact that DW is pregnant and we have three already. Busy, busy.

Great job, texwife&mom!! 3 miles is fabulous!

I just finished 6 miles over the noon hour here at work. No other running buddies today ... I think they must have declared a mutiny on running today! WUSSES!!

Anyway, the heat index is 92 .. so I didn't go the full 8 miles. I figure I can do an additional 2 miles tonight at home once the sun isn't quite so intense.

All I can say is, thank God for an office with a gym with showers!! COLD SHOWERS!

                        :yes
