I've read so much conflicting stuff about whether or not you can burn fat to power weight lifting, and now I finally think I have the answer.
As many of you know, I have to control my blood sugars pretty tightly, and I've been gradually building up my cardio work, staying fully aerobic, never getting out of breath, keeping my heart rate to 140 beats per minute max. This way I can pretty sure I'm staying in fat burning mode and I don't throw a hypo - if I go much more than 140 for more than a minute or so my blood sugars go crazy, which I've always attributed to going anaerobic, which may or may not be the same as carb-burning, according to what research you believe.
Well, for the last week or so I've gradually let myself out of ketosis, upped the carbs a little (something to do with buying a smoothie maker for my son...) and kept my exercise down to just walking between 2 and 4 miles most days. Today I did an hour in the gym getting used to the machines, had my first serious bash at weight lifting, and then walked (gently) 3 miles home. The walking was not significantly different to the exercise I've been doing over the last week, which never brought me back into ketosis.
This evening, despite an extra smoothie (containing grape juice, courtesy my 9 year old's newly invented recipe), I'm back in ketosis! So as far as I'm concerned, weights *do* help you burn fat!
