  • my workout routine

So when I started atkins about 3 weeks ago, I had THE most sedentary lifestyle ever...I would get winded just taking out the trash! My first day of exercise I just did the treadmill for 20 mins(1mile). Then I added in 5 mins of the eliptical..tried to do more but it was SO hard when I started! The next week I did 15 mins on the eliptical every day, and last week I got up to 30 mins a day, which is a challenge. I heard from some people that I would get better results if I broke down my workout, say 15 min on eliptical, 10 min on stationary bike, and 10 min on treadmill...so that's what I did today...I did get in a 35 min total which is more than what I had previously done, but do you think the changeup will show me better results?

Actually my trainer said to stick with one machine for your cardio workout. You can rotate machines from day to day, working different muscle groups, but she said it's better to stick with one machine for the entire workout.

I don't know what type of elliptical you use, but at my gym, it has different courses that work different muscle groups and you can go backwards to get a change up, and raise or lower the resistance.

if you are bored then changing machines for the cardio makes sense but as long as you raise your heart rate for the time needed it doesn't matter how you do it.
I was like you when I started 20 min at 2MPH on the treadmill and thought I was rocky when I finished. Now that seems so slow and so short. you are going to be amazed at how fast you get in shape and your workout time will get longer and you will be moving faster too.

What are you doing as the mandatory resistance workout?

I agree stick with one thing for one day. It's actually better for you because when you are resting your "treadmill" muscles one day you can work your "bike" muscles. If you do them all the same day you're not getting much done and you're not giving yourself any rest.

I think your next step should be to get a heart rate monitor.
That way you can do heart rate training. By staying in the "zone" you know how good your workout is.

ok, yeah I was only doing the eliptical before, but I got advice from someone to rotate machines every 10-15 mins, so I tried it yesterday..Personally I LOVE the eliptical, and I feel like staying on one machine helps my endurance/stamina...it's mentally challenging and I love it. At our gym we have one of these:

I have been sticking with the manual program because there is no heart monitor on the machine, and when I tried the other programs, they would kind of stay at a neutral mode when it said "need heart rate from heart monitor" I don't really know how to fix it, and it never really goes up to the next interval..it keeps the time going but the workout stays at the same level the whole time.

If you get a heart rate monitor, most good machines can read from the strap that you put on. You'll have to buy that. Some gyms can lend you a monitor strap but it's not common.

Clare, someone at your gym should be able to tell you if your machine has different courses to work different muscle groups, if it's not on the machine itself. Your machine is different from the one I use, but mine has where you enter your weight, how long you want to go, and the course you want - I think it has 9 different courses, and the ramp changes position as you go along, simulating things like walking/running up a hill, down a hill, etc and you can change the resistance to make it harder/easier, and you can peddle your feet backwards to use different muscles.

                Have fun!

                  Ohhh..it's not a gym...just a workout room

You can get one for under $100. I'd recommend a Polar model.
There are always a lot on ebay/amazon or your local sports store.

whoa looks like im not getting one of those anytime soon then...My fiance supports me and he has already complained about how much groceries cost these days...haven't even been able to get ketostrips yet, and he whined about the vitamins I bought...maybe in a few months when he sees this isn't some fad diet I am on and I am looking slimmer he will be willing to fork out the cash. Or *GASP* maybe I can get a job! But that's another story entirely...not possible at the moment : / i wish

we moved here last August, from another city about 1.5 hours away...my fiance didn't have a job before because he didn't have a car, and he is a computer programmer...we lived in a kind of backwoods town and he really had nowhere to work there. But he met me, and I have a car...eventually I moved in with him, and I started helping him look for a job in Houston. He found one, and we moved up here, he makes great money, and he uses my car to get to work. We are working on getting a new one so I can go to school and start working again, but he is trying to pay off some debt first. We have a little under $2000 in debt left to pay. I have tried getting a job around here but they aren't willing to give me a decent schedule, I live in inner city Houston and I will not work overnight shifts. And recently I kind of stopped trying because it has been almost a year, and right now I want to focus on my diet. And ever since 6 mos ago I ran out of clothes that fit me...I just don't feel comfortable enough with the way I look to get a job right now anymore. I also do have money for school in a trust fund, so I'd really like to go to school also, as soon as we get him a car.
