  • Running?

It's been years and years (we won't count them) since I did any running. I did love it, once I got used to it.

My question is this: Given that I currently am getting 45 minutes per day minimum of cardio, is there any benefit to me in starting to try to run again?

Is running better than another form of cardio? Worse? Can some of you running addicts who started this woe as non-runners perhaps post about what you've experienced?

As of 10/31/05, losta total of 56.75 inches!

    Re: Running?

    Don't do running.
It turns into a freakin obsession.
    First there's speed.
    Then mileage.
Then 5K's. And making a PR every time out.
    Then 10K's, HMs, and Marathons.
Platar Fasciitis, Achillies Tendonitis, Runner's knee.
Dri fit, HRM, pronation, supination, aerobic, anaerobic.

I haven't run since Friday and I'm getting a little antsy....

Don't do it or it will take over your life!

      ROTFLMAO

But yeah, it's like that! And for me it drops weight the fastest. Mostly because it uses the large muscle groups as well as the core muscles.

I think that's the case with exercise in general...

If anyone would have ever told me that I'd become an exercise
junky, I would have laughed them under the table!

Well here I am..... Hello, I'm Monica and I'm an exercise junky.
Yesterday was my rest day and I NEED to go workout.... NOW!

"Let's see I ran 4 at lunch...going to hit weights after work...should I run another warmup mile on the TM..."

See what I mean? That's the convo in my brain right now....

            Re: Running?

I'm a new runner and you can add me to the addicted list. I love it. I'm 42 years old and have never run in my life. I do really believe in cross-training though. So, even if you're doing other forms of cardio, I think it's great to throw some running into the mix. I run, swim and cycle. I also lift weights and do core strengthening stuff. Each really enhances the other. I think I'm a better runner because I swim. I think I'm a better cyclist because I run, etc. It's very cool!

Well, I'm still not getting many true responses. I realize it can be addicting. I just want to know if it is better than other types of cardio. Also, how many days a week, minimum, shoudl one run? If I incorporate it into my usual exercise routine, would I substitute running for the elliptical machine every other day, or what?

Any form of cardio that raises your heart rate a minimum of 30 minutes to an hour a day is excellent. If you enjoy running, then work at it .. If you're just beginning, I strongly suggest following the Couch to 5k program at www.coolrunning.com. The worst thing you can do is to start out too fast, trying to do too much too soon.

The elliptical machine is a great way to improve your cardiovascular health. Its easier on the joints than running, but just as effective. Personally, I love running outdoors, but do whatever you enjoy most.

Unlike immediately addicting crack, running is more like fine wine...the more you taste it the more you like it.
It took me 6 months of working out to be able to run a mile.
It took me 9 more months before I could run a 5K.
It wasn't until a couple months ago when I started running outside that I really became addicted to it.
And I second checking out http://coolrunning.com
I think the addiction comes when you're running outside, watching the scenery go by, and you're not struggling at all, and you keep going an hour or more. Once a week I run on the waterfront of Puget Sound where I can see mountains, the sound, ferries, yachts, seagulls, and the city all one one run.
