  • Does anyone else HATE exercise as much as me??

I have such a hard time getting motivated to exercise! I literally HATE it. I'd almost rather take a beatin' than exercise. LOL Being over 100 lbs overweight really bites as far as exercising goes, but it can only be beneficial to me, so how do you others get motivated? I just don't feel good after I exercise, like so many people say they do, or I might want to do it more.

Let me say first, I am NOT a morning person. I get up around 9, but I don't WAKE up until about 11. LOL I've always been this way. I have 2 small children (2 years and 6 months), and first thing in the morning is out for me. Well, I guess I could take a walk with them in the stroller, but that gets boring after a while. One thing I really love to do that I can't do very well anymore is ride horses. I can't wait until I'm light enough that the poor horse isn't going to grunt and quiver when I get on him (unless I find a Clydesdale somewhere). I have dreams about riding horses, although most of the time it's me looking through all these horses and none of them are big enough for me to ride. Ah, anxiety dreams. Gotta love 'em.

Anybody have any suggestions for good ways to exercise with little kids in tow? Or in the way? I have some exercise tapes and things, but man, have you ever tried to bounce around the room with a 2 year old in the way? LOL Especially in a teeny living room like I have. What are some FUN things to do that I might not be thinking of?

Hello, I am a mommie as well. Two boys 3 & 4. You aren't going to like my answer, but I get up and run @ 5am. Like you I used to dread the morning and I would only roll out of bed when one of my pumpkins needed me. Now, it is just part of my new healthier, happier routine. I also try to work in tae bo at naptime. Part of losing weight and getting healthy is accepting that what "I have always" done or been like got you to be in the condition you are in now--ie that didn't work!! Also as a fellow mommie I know how hard it is to make oneself a priority, I had so much guilt when I first started Tae bo and my boys "needed" something. They got over it and so did I. I am a better mommie now than I have ever been, I have more confidence, and energy to lead them thru life. And I can't tell you the pride I feel when my 4 year old says "Mom you exercise? I am so proud of you." I know I am setting a good example for them and that is what keeps me getting out of bed and hitting the concrete at 5 am. I hope this helps a little. Good luck and good job taking the first steps to a more active life.

YES!!! I hate exercise with a vengeance so I do as little of it as possible BUT having said that, I did find one form of exercise I enjoyed and that was walking - so I walk home from work (or to work as well if I'm organised)
It started out because I'd injured the plantar facitis muscles in my feet so i could barely walk on them, let alone jump around doing cardio. Since then the pain's gotten better as the weight came off and I find walking a great way to de-stress and make sure I don't "take" work home into my personal life. Also you can vary how fast, how slow, how intense you walk ie carry some weights and in my case a heavy backpack full of bottles of water (I get free bottles from work)

PLUS, you have 2 small children right?

I was wondering... what about trying to carry them for a little? Like one day while you're walking, carry them for a minute. Another day carry them for 2 minutes and build up from there. I know it sounds daft but I've noticed many mums get back into shape quicker because they are having to run after their toddlers or pick up and carry their little ones - they work like handy weights imo and really can give a boost to your upper body muscles... just a thought.

A third thought... housework is often counted as exercise - you know, if you try and vacuum every nook and cranny, reach high up to dust the tops of cupboards, stretch up to wipe your windows, clean your pool, carry the rubbish out... ok, with little ones some of these activities could be hard while you're trying to mind them at the same time... but it does keep you active around the home while you can still keep an eye on them, you know?

Dance. Put some music on and dance a little - the kids will love it. I don't mean knock-yourself-out-air-guitar stuff just yet. I used to walk miles but I ripped all the tendons out of one ankle and I can't do it now.
If it's any consolation I hate exercise more than any one I've ever known. The only Yoga postition I ever managed is the one when you lie on your back and don't move. I used to walk miles because I had no other method of transport and the nearest anything was a 5 mile round trip. dancing keeps me going and gives the family a good laff.

How can you hate something that tones your body, gives you energy and improves your mood? I don't hate it .. I hate it when I "can't" exercise.

          Addicted. Totally.

Well, because it doesn't make me feel good, it doesn't improve my mood, and it doesn't give me energy. It makes me tired and grumpy and so glad when I stop. LOL! I figure that will get better though, once I get in better shape. I just gotta get

I did take a nice, long walk tonight and it wasn't too bad. It wasn't murderously hot today, like it has been lately here in TN, so that made it much more bearable. I don't think I'll be carrying my kids anywhere anytime soon, though! LOL I'm gonna have to get alot more buff for that...

Re: Does anyone else HATE exercise as much as me??

I think if you haven't been a regular excerciser for a long time getting started is really difficult. I'm not gonna lie to you the first week or two are really hard. Your body is not used to the workouts and so you are extra tired, sore, cranky all of those things you describe. However after that first week the adrenaline starts kicking in, you have tons of energy, you sleep better. I have a little girl and I know what you mean about the workout tapes when she's around almost impossible. I DO put on some fast music and we dance together, I also wait until she's asleep to do my WATP tapes. I have a problem with getting bored though so I have to change it up a bit, today for example I went rollerblading, I haven't done that in years literally (and I am using that correctly). I also went and shot some hoops at the local park. I ended up burning about 600 calories today and it was actually fun! Just take it slow, get back into the excercise routine and before you know it you'll be a pro.

Oh and don't forget it takes 21 days to form a habit. Do anything for 21 days and it becomes almost second nature. That includes excercise. Good luck.

I don't know about that LOL I went to the gym daily for 6 months and it easily took me a week to undo it, esp as I didn't enjoy it. Kinda like me trying to get into a habit of brushing my teeth 3 times a day after each meal - I did that for 6 months and it was good for me to brush my teeth, but I still didn't like doing it and these days I have to literally force myself to do it LOL

Re: Does anyone else HATE exercise as much as me??

amen. I despise the actual exercise. I FORCE myself to do it every day, but admittedly, once it's over and I am showered and done cursing, THEN I feel fabulous. I recently started exercising first thing in the morning and I definitely find a difference in my day. I am more alert and peppy and just generally in better trim.

But back to the point at hand, remember that you do not have to do a lot to get exercise. If you really do hate it that much, shoot for something very small. Even a 10 minute game of ring-around-the rosey with your kids. Do SOMETHING everyday and I suspect, over time, it will get easier for you to step it up.

Think of all the things we have to do in life that we don't necessarily enjoy ..

                        -- changing diapers
                        -- cleaning house
                        -- mowing the lawn
                        -- scrubbing the toilets
                        -- laundry!

Now compare that to exercise ... I know which I'd rather do!!

I'm so used to changing diapers I can do it in my sleep.

But I hate exercising as well, but I do it because I have to and I do enjoy how I feel when I'm done. I think maybe it's the fact that I am done I enjoy so much. LOL

That's why I'm running races, I don't want to embarrass myself so I have to train.
