Did you gain weight and inches when you started lifting?

I have been lifting for a few weeks now and have gained 3 lbs and inches in legs and arms. NOT the outcome I was going for . Hopefully the inches will drop off again soon.

Any experience with this? Thanks for your input.

Um, nope. Arms are down by an inch and a half, and thighs are down by 2 inches.....

I've been at it for a month.......but I also do a LOT of cardio, especially walking.

Wow, Finelly! You have had great result with your WT. Your results are what I am looking for. How do you train?

I do cardio 3x a week for 45 minutes, too.

I wouldn't call myself a weight lifter, although I have some 8 & 10 pound dumbells I use for my arms ... no weight gain here .. how could I? I run my buns off! I love the definition I have in my arms ... so I'd have to say its been a real plus for me!

          Re: Calling all weight lifters

I've lifted for 2 years now and I haven't really gained much.
I have a lot more strength and definition but not really much more bulk.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I know my gains can't be muscle, so they are probably just water retention.

              Re: Calling all weight lifters

I have not seen an increase in my weight or inches since being serious about weight lifting faithfully. (Started in January! Lift 3X per week)) However...in addition to my weight lifting I ALWAYS work-out aerobically 7 days a week at least 45 minutes per session. This might be where you need to increase as this is the fat burning part of exercise. Keep on with lifting the weights, too, though. As the pounds come off your gonna love the definition that you see!!!!!

Good luck and keep up the good work!

                Re: Calling all weight lifters

Ok, Kelly, here's my routine: I work out 6 days a week.

I get a minimum of 45 min of cardio each day. Sometimes, like today, I do an aqua aerobics class. Most days, however, I do a combination (depending on my attention span!) of stationary bike, treadmill, elliptical trainer.

I then alternate upper and lower body weight training each day. Both machines and free weights, because I am finding I like some of each.

About three times a week I take a long, fast walk on the beach. I started out doing 30 min and am now up to 50 min, going approximately 3.5 miles per hour. I walk barefoot.

The first time around on Atkins, which was last year, I rarely exercised and lost a lot of inches - like 40 or 50. This time, I'm really increasing strength and endurance and have been utterly consistent, and have lost 23.5 inches in only 4 weeks. Which is really jazzy, since I've only lost 9 lbs!!!!!!! But believe me, it SHOWS!

Forgot to make clear that the 50 min beach walk is in ADDITION to the cardio and weight training at the gym.....

                    Re: Calling all weight lifters

actually the inches and pounds are a direct result of the new to you exercise load you are placing on your muscles and should happen to everybody who starts a new workout routine regardless of what they were doing before or during. It has nothing to do with how much running you do nor how much you are eating either. you are right it is fluid and it is called superhydration. Soon your muscles will realize their new load is actually their normal load and release those pounds of fluid they have stored up to rescue you from whatever is causing you to work them so hard cause based on our genetics we respond as if that was a safety threat not a fun exercise program for weight loss. Every time you increase the load you are lifting if you do in in a big chunk you will see that happen again untilyour body gets used to it.

if you are taking a phosphogen supplement this will add fluid bulk to your muscles too. makes them look bigger so muscle builders like it

Intersting stuff, and since most people increase their load usally on a weekly basis, it happens quit often I assume?

As opposed to someone who does the same routine for weeks on and end.
