  • Too Fatigued For Exercize

I know that I need to start adding exercize to my regimen, but I have several limitations.

Pretty much the only cardio that I can do is the eliptical trainer, because I have a deformity in my knees, and also some general joint problems, that makes pretty much anything else impossible. I can do slow yoga (none of that Ashtanga stuff for me, I always end up hurting myself) for stretching, and when my back isn't acting up, I can do some Pilates...although it aggravates my hip joints.

Secondly, as a result of induction, I can still barely walk down the street without feeling as though I am about to pass out and my legs give way underneath me. I'm fine sitting here at home, working from my computer, but I get extremely fatigued doing anything else. I also get extremely dizzy if I bend over, and sometimes just from standing from a sitting position. I can barely keep the hair-dryer lifted long enough to do my hair! I'm getting my 20g of carbs a day...probably a bit more, as I am not being too strict, as I knew that my body would react this way from the last time I attempted Atkins (I threw my back out due to the extreme muscle weakness last time about 16 months ago, and still have back problems today as a result).

I know that everyone says that eventually I will wake up and my body would have compeltely adjusted and then I'll feel normal again. At what point does this happen. I'm on day 11 of induction, so it's still early, but I was hoping this would subside after the first week. I'm very paranoid of sustaining another injury if I exercize prematurely.

    Any advice is appreciated.

This FAQ says up to 2 weeks: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=6758

Looks like they have a lot of good faqs here! (see the FAQ button up on top)

      Re: Too Fatigued For Exercize

This fatigue thing doesn't sound right to me.
There are a million things that can cause it...but some spring to mind:
      1) not enough fat/calories: you could be starving yourself
      2) not enough fat-burn muscle: without exercise your body doesn't have much need to burn fat...even small amounts of carbs can prevent ketosis...have you checked the strips?
      3) anemia or another vitamin deficiency
      4) hormone issue (thyroid?)

If by day 14 you are not feeling better you should immediately move to OWL and up the carbs.
Any kind of sustained exercise (pool walking?) will be beneficial...you may want to wait until after Induction.

        Re: Too Fatigued For Exercize

Thanks. I'm at day 14 now, and not AS fatigued. I actually went to the zoo and walked around for 4 hours without too much trouble. Stairs and inclines still kill me though. I think I'll start on the eliptical tomorrow - nothing too fast, though.

I'm definatly not starving myself, the ketosticks are still dark pink, I've never had a hormone problem, but I could probably do with some more vitamins.

I think I'm going to break down and get the low-carb shakes, since they have nice nutrition in them. I have been eating more veggies than anything else, too, and that seems to have helped a bit...or else my body is finally adjusting.

I'll keep you posted on the results once I get to the gym tomorrow.

          Hi Devi,

I had really bad Atkins flu when I started, it took me 3 weeks before I finally started to have some energy again. I have Multiple Schlorosis, so I know what it's like to have issues with exercise. When I'm having MS, I have to adjust my exercise routine. I lift light weights sitting in a chair, if you belong to a gym, try the recumbent exercise bike or a rowing machine. There is also a video called bed-top yoga, it's yoga moves you can do while lying in bed. I just make myself move everyday no matter how bad I feel, and I take those big energy days as a blessing from above and use every minute!

Hi Devi, hope you are feeling better. Have you ever tried water aerobics? Its supposed to be pretty low impact and lots of docs recommend if for people with knee problems (and arthritis).

              Re: Too Fatigued For Exercize

I haven't tried the water aerobics...but since I have both knee problems AND arthritis, perhaps I will give it a try when I get the money to join a real gym. Right now I'm stuck with the poopy one here at the condo complex. It has an elliptical, thank goodness, since I can't use the treadmills. But other than the stairmaster (out), the treadmills (out) and the bikes (too boring), they only have free-weights which I am too leary of doing incorrectly...and there's always big sweaty men on them anyway!

I'm committing to getting on the elliptical for 25-30 mins, 5 days a week. We'll see if it helps me Whoosh!

Devi, have you ever checked into taking vinegar for your arthritis? I know people who have and they've really found it helpful.

Hope your elliptical workout works well for you!! Great job, wanting to exercise, despite your limitations!
